Ideas for online retail

Hello Sythe, I've been thinking about a few things and I'm hoping that someone will be willing to help out.


I'm thinking about starting an online retail website of some kind, and I'm just struggling to come up with a niche item/thing to sell. I've thought about stuff like portable cell phone chargers, lighters, or even some kind of professionally packaged baked goods but I haven't been able to come to a decision.

Here are some of the things that I'm looking for in a product:

• Good margins
• Quality and robust product with limited return rate
• Product appeals to a large enough group of people that sales would be feasible
• Easy for me to get a hold of and warehouse, drop ship, or create

I'd also like to mention that I'll be willing to give a small royalty to the person that gives me a good enough idea. Just throw them out here or PM me if anything comes to mind!

 

You contradict yourself:

Is the opposite of:

- "Appropriate for many people, not just a small group"

Anyways, I think you should ditch this "appropriate for all people" thing. Otherwise I highly doubt you're going to find a product which satisfies all those criteria. Start small and branch off.

 

Sorry, I guess my wording was confusing.

All that I meant by the second statement was that the market cannot be so narrow to the point where it would be limiting. Such as "men between the ages of 35 and 40 who only like the color yellow" wouldn't be a good suggestion because its too narrow in scope. I'll edit it to clarify.

No one is going to give you a niche that works and un-saturated.

Right first off....

What are you good at?
Is there any manufactures/factories near your area?
What business are local to you?
Are you in a small town/large city?

 

There is a very low chance you will be handed an amazing idea that will make you lots of money in return for a small royalty. If I were you, I would try to be creative enough and business-minded enough to come up various ideas on my own and test them, to find the one that works best. Alternatively, if I had the capital, hire a consultant, as opposed to looking for (essentially) handouts here. People who have their own niches will not reveal them to a potential competitor, and anyone who does not have one is bullshitting you with their ideas if they aren't proven successful anyways. Products such as what you seek are the "gold" of online retail. They don't come at a dime a dozen, as you seem to expect they do.

Don't even mind saturated if it could still be profitable. Just looking for some ideas here, it doesn't have to be some super secret idea that the person would be an idiot to tell me about, I'm just interested to see if anyone has any ideas while I brainstorm.

Tech stuff is what I'm good at, I've sold computers in the past but sales are slow and they're annoying to support etc.

I live in a really small town and there isn't even really anything being manufactured here, it'd either have to be something I make or something imported.

You're way overanalyzing what I'm asking here, I'm just seeing if anyone wants to bounce ideas off of me that they don't plan on perusing themselves. I don't "expect" anything.

If you live in a fairly local area you can try and become that Computer guy everyone calls when things break haha.

Sell SEO, SMO services to local companies then branch out further a feild.

Any company that needs seo, smo would need printers / computers. Find a wholesale for computers etc and your sorted (http://www.techdata.com/index.aspx)

Great ideas. It is really of great help as we go on for online business. Social media or networking sites are also an effective one.

 

You may want to start small and start a merching RS3GP/07GP Site, you could merch it a bit and make a pretty good profit over time.
You also can try selling baked goods, you could do fund raisers and make quite a bit of money selling cookie dough for like $20 with people buying it to raise money for organizations.
Another possible option would to have a site and buy used phones cheap and sell them for a higher price on Ebay.

You could try selling RS GP on Craigslist / Kijiji locally. Since you're on Sythe you have access to these things at good prices. You can jack them up a fair bit if you trade in person.
