In Canada it's the complete opposite, I remember when my Mazda got totaled they gave me the same amount of money I bought it for 2 years prior without any issues.

 

That's a weird system. Here the insurance company of the person who's at fault hires an expert and he determines the value of the vehicle prior to accident and that is the amount u get paid. If lets say your car isn't totaled u get the amount - the worth of your wreckage.
