Is a second infinite?

Time is merely but a reference, it helps our bodies prepare for certain events and keeps a schedule going non-stop, solitary confinement or "the hole" is made to trick the body you take away time and light and the body does not know how to react.
Time in necessary but not existent.

Ok just bare with me for a second...

Pun intended?

(On Topic)
I believe that a second is NOT infinite. There are not an infinite amount of numbers between 0 and 1. Or more accurately, perhaps, 1 and 0. There may be an infinite of comprehendable numbers between 1 and 0, but there is not an unending sequence of existing numbers in that space of time, or there would be no existing time sequence labeled as the period 1 and 0.

There is an infinite amount of numbers in between 1 and 0. We don't want to get so complicated as to continue creating more numbers, so we just call it infinity.

Ok just bare with me for a second...

between 0 and 1 are an infinite amount of numbers (1.1,1.00000001,1.0000000000000000000001), so how exactly does a count down reach zero?

How can something subtract from infinity?

I might be able to explain it a bit better if you like.

Isn't (1.1,1.00000001,1.0000000000000000000001), not between 1-0? but over 1? lol.

Soz didn't read everyone's comment but i didn't get it.

But that just what i saw, more then 1.

Time actually doesn't exist. In my opinion at the very least. Time is actually something created to keep track of tasks in the ancient times. The earliest civilization that I have been able to find that actually kept track of time were the Ancient Sumerians. The creation of time began with capturing the movement of the sun and the moon and then recording their position in the sky. Which gave Sumerians a way to tell whether or not day-light or night-time would end or begin. That's the way I see it. Feel free to stab at me with your virtual knifes. I will be on the other-side of my monitor waiting to receive them. :)

I agree; time logically shouldn't be "real"

im gonna answer this without reading the thread lol...a countdown reaches zero because when you count down by whole numbers, you are simply skipping the infinite amount of more specific values, you are moving accross them all at once. you are in essence questioning the ability of your fingers to type (lol) the distance becomes infinitismally smaller. also, i recall something about planck time...smallest amount of time measurable (theoretically) according to quantum mechanics. its the amount of time it takes light in a vacuum to move over a planck distance.

edit: more info here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Planck_time

MAN this topic is getting interesting :) thank you MENSA or i wouldnt understand this lol...

in all honesty time doesn't exist, we just use events as reference points. Time is no different than length. length doesnt exist, just represents distance.

You do realize if it was .99999999 repeated, and you subtracted it from 2, it would 1.00000000000 repeated with a 1 at the end (but seeing as it is infinite, there really is no end). In any sense, it's not 1.1111111 repeated.

The idea of infinity, as said before, is relative however. As you approach something to infinity, it essentially that number.

your reaching one of my favorite topics, one of the many holes in math. a repeating decimal that cannot be shown as a fraction. when i brought this up to my 8th grade math teacher her response was that .9 reapeating is so close to one that it is one >.< bs, saying 9 repeating is 1 is no more accurate than saying 2 + 2 = 5
