If you are looking short term, gold isn't the way to go. The main reason gold is a terrible short term investment is because unlike oil, nothing can directly alter the price of gold by 10%+ in a short time period. My personal opinion is to invest a portion of your savings (even if it is only a few grams of gold) and get some gold bullion/rounds.. Keep them in a safe place or even in a safety depositing box. Wait 20-30 years and you should make a decent return on your investment, considering that you didnt really do anything.. But, before investing, remember that in order for this to be a success, you must not only make money in the end, you want to get a higher return than your local bank pays in interest. You want to make sure you got a higher percentage of return than you would have had if you just left all your money in the bank to collect interest.

    Helpful hints:
    1. Save your receipt from where you purchase the gold from (they normally write the spot price on it)
    2. Make sure you keep the receipt/a paper with the price you bought the gold at WITH your gold
    3. Dont forget about silver.. I personally recommend 50% silver 50% gold investment. Both should rise, but if one has a huge rise, you won't miss out.
    4. Keep your gold safe!!! (I like to check mine and make sure it is all there once every few months)
    5. Don't tell your friends! (only trustworthy ones.. Even then, be careful) [you never know]
    6. Don't settle for a loss when it comes to precious metals... Hold it your whole life, let your kids have it... Dont sell until money is made.. It will always be shiny and cool at the least.

    Best of luck,
    Andrew (Anet390)

I'd recommend silver, seeing as it's only around $30/ounce.
All it can do is rise.

EDIT: Bad advice. It's at 19/ounce now. Sorry to anyone who was a derp and buyed it.

    well, it can fall.

LOL.. I see what you are saying though. But always remember, when investing, a "guarenteed gain/rise" can become a bad idea very quickly.

The last few days have been a good time to jump into a short rise in gold. The euro "crisis" is edging up gold stocks a bit.

THIS THIS THIS. Another great time to invest is after there is an oil spill.. Depending on the spill, this can cause a rise or fall in oil. But, no matter what the spill, the crisis normally creates a small drop in percious metals making you able to stock up for cheap.

As terrible as it sounds, any disaster (natural or some sort of war) is a great time to invest. You can bet that a lot of smart people will make a ton of money with an Iranian- Israeli war.

Here's the best investing advice I can give:

    1. Gold is a no-no, about the time when people think something is a GOOD investment, it's not, it's all a bloody sham.
    2. Go to school and get an education. And find a decent, well-paying job.

Gold is heavily used in electronics, and it's one of the most versatile metals... It's always going to be used.

As far as the investing goes , I'd wait for it to crash and then buy

Currently inflation is very low so that's not the right time to invest in gold. inflation-indexed US savings bonds on the other hand will insure you against deflation or falling prices.
