Intoxication and responsibility.

So you're saying if a mental illness is triggered by a drug, they should go to a psychiatric hospital? They chose to use the drug to trigger the illness, so wouldn't it be their fault? A lot of mental illnesses are passed down through genetics and then triggered later in life by either a tragic event or through the use of certain drugs. This is simple, entry level psychology.

I'm getting very narrow answers, although they're not wrong, they're being repeated from previous posts. When I give new ideas and questions I expect different answers..

Ok, well I didn't know drugs can trigger an illness, but why wouldn't they go to a psychiatric hospital? What is the difference in how they came about getting the illness. They still have it and need to be somewhere it can be treated. Everything you are asking is going back to the same answer because thats all there is.

But what if a mental illness is triggered by the drug? How would you sentence the person?

You would sentence this person just like any other mentally ill person. The fact that a "drug" was involved doesn't change the fact that they can have a sanity plea. As long as doctors/psychologists can prove the disease or illness exists, it's valid in the court of law.

Now do I think this is right? Hell no. I don't think there should even be a sanity plea regardless if drugs were involved. That person should get treated like everyone else.

One can argue that without the use of the drug, there would be no mental illness involved, so therefore they would get a regular sentence. Also, this isn't just an argument about committing crimes and having to appear before a judge, everyone is looking at it from one point of view. What about other situations? Such as relationship issues, family issues, friendships, etc.

Good point, but had the drug(s) not been used by the person, then they would not have been diagnosed with a mental illness. Everyone has been posting the same thing "use the drugs, you're responsible". So with that said, are they not responsible for being diagnosed?

Please explain what you mean by other situations exactly.

They are not responsible for being diagnosed because they can't control whether they inherited the illness. Its kinda like asking if you are responsible for being a boy or girl. You can't control it.

You just contradicted yourself. And you can infact control a mental illness and prevent it from happening, or therapeutically heal it. Please do even the simplest research before posting.

Alcoholism is characterised by an increased tolerance of and physical dependence on alcohol, affecting an individual's ability to control alcohol consumption safely. These characteristics are believed to play a role in impeding an alcoholic's ability to stop drinking. Alcoholism can have adverse effects on mental health, causing psychiatric disorders to develop and an increased risk of suicide. The onset of depression is a common symptom.

Alcohol consumption won't cause mental retardation to the consumer, but will indeed cause 'Fetal Alcohol Syndrome' which can trigger a variety of disabilities to the consumers baby. Regardless, you can consider Alcoholism a disease because its a state of mind that triggers you to act the way you do around the beverage.

Yup, I agree with more. You shouldn't be drinking while driving. You're putting not only yourself, but others in danger - also known as reckless driving

Yes, they are just as responsible as someone who has no mental illnesses. Just because they have a mental illness does not give them an excuse to kill or wrong do.

Should be equally, if not more responsible while drinking.

Definitely. They firstly choose to drink, then choose to kill. Double responsible.
