Internet Explorer Problems

Operating System: Xp home edition

Problem: I am having problems with Internet Explorer. When I open Interenet Explorer I get the "this page can not be displayed" page. I am able to use im and MSN. I am also able to access the internet by opening a folder such as "my Documents" and typing the url in the address bar. i am not that good with computer but I believe my problem happened around the time I tried to download I.E. 7. I talked to someone from SBC (my dsl provider) and I believe they helped me remove Windows 7. I believe I was not able to use msn or aim or access the internet while i had Windows 7. I am now able to use msn and aim and can acces the internet through a folder like "my Documents" but whenever something pops up it pops up in I.E. and I can not view it. Any help?

 

If i should download another version of I.E. where is the best safest place to get it?

 

unistall your ie7 then reinstal latest verison, because the first realease had alot of bugs in it, or just get mozilla fire fox

 

I have fire fox also, and when I try to open it I get an "Unable to connect" page. Maybe it is because of a firewall or proxy? i do not think I have one? How could I check to see if its because of a firewall and how could I remove it?

Close down Your firewall (including windows Via control panel)
Make sure none on IE's port(s) are being blocked.

Download Firefox from here (preferred);

how do I make sure I have closed down all of my firewalls? I think the problem is a firewall somewhere that I cand find. Like I said I dont know anythign about computers. Is there a command I can run to tell me if I have a firewall blocking I.E.? If so how do I run it? Thanks a ton!!

 

Try Booting in safemode and opening IE, hopefully the firewall(s) won't initialize.

 

I would say you should download fire fox it is the best internet around. ( at least i think so

LISTEN: I have mozilla fire fox. I believe it is a probelm with a Symantec Anti Virus which I have installed on my pc, however when I try to uninstall it I can not because it says the Admin must be logged in to uninstall it. How can I test to see if the problem is a firewall? Is there anything I can do on my computer to show me if that firewall is the reasons why IE and Fire Fox can't connect?

 

Boot in safemode, and try to connect. If not, disable the windows firewall through control pannel (Start > Control panel > Windows Firewall). Then turn off all virusscan. Make sure it is all disabled. Open up Task Manager and any proccess that look like they are used by a firewall (they will be listed under Owner only). Now try.

 

Alright, I booted in safemode. I believe the problem is a norton antivirus 2006. I tried to remove it but it wont let me remove it in safemode. It also wont let me remove it in regular mode since it says I have to be logged in as administrator or something

 

Go to Run > firewall.cpl and disable the firewall.

I'm not really sure, sorry man. Maybe try disabling Norton and any other anti-virus as well.

 

Log in on your parents (presumably the administrators) profile, and delete Norton (Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs > Remove Norton. If you still have the installation disk, insert it, and there should be an option to repair or remove Norton 2006. Select remove.
