1.) First thing you need to do go to pythons site and download the Windows installer.

2.) After downloading the install file, locate it, right click and choose Install

3.) The first window that shows up gives you the choice of who to install python for.

4.) The second window is asking you where you would like python installed. Default
directory is C:\Python26\ but I have seen many people shorten it to C:\Py\ or C:\Python\.

5) The third window is asking you how you would want python installed. You can
make your own judgements here but I suggest just clicking Next.

6.) Thats it!!! At this point you should see it go through the installation process. Click Finish
when it is complete.

Now that python is installed lets go download a python script and run it.

1.) First you find a python script and save it with the extension .py

2.) Now lets run the command prompt by going to Start >> Run and typing cmd.exe and hitting Enter
Your command prompt (cmd.exe) should load and be ready for commands.

3.) Now we need to move to where we installed python (C:\Python26) with the cd command.
After typeing cd C:\Python26 and hitting Enter you should see.

C:\Python26>_

4.) At this point you can use the dir command to view the files.

5.) To run the script all you have to type is: Python (Script you want to use, with the .py)

I did this on my laptop, my vista laptop because my desktop wasn't working right when i wanted to make this guide. any question's just pm me.

This guide is a updated version of the old one, it wad made by user request claiming python can not be downloaded and performed with vista. I can provide a valid link of the old version of this guide, I do not take full responsibility for this guides. However, all of my other guides are %100 by me, and I take full credit for them. This I take partial credit. As reason it was made: Proof python can be downloaded and performed on Vista.

I think you should inform people of what version of Python to download. Python 3 is out now, however I believe Python 2.6 is more widely used and hence you should indicate that it is the version that should be downloaded if one wishes to learn Python.

It'd be nice if you could also put together a list of resources for things that people might like to use for different scenarios. For example, Putting a link to Django under the title "Web Development" in your post would let people know that Django is a web framework. In short, see if you can compile a list of resources for Python as well as just telling people how to install it.

Also, I've noticed you said "Download the Windows installer." I disagree with you saying that because I myself am a frequent user of Linux. For the sake of people with other operating systems, it might be worthwhile just to say "Download the installer for Python 2.6 relative to your operating system." Or even tell people the commands required to install Python on different Linux distributions (i.e. in Gentoo, 'emerge python-x').

Other than that, it's fairly simple but it could get people started. A little more work and the tutorial will be good.
