[APPROVED/REVIEW] In Lieu of Conversations

So one recurring theme that I've seen is that a lot of businesses on Sythe currently operate using Skype or Discord, often utilising confirmation PMs to verify the identity of a user. Currently I feel the Sythe private conversation system is underutilized, so I propose a replacement of it that's basically a chat box between two users (more if invited) where the messages are archived similarly to the current conversation system.

Advantages of off-site chat:

1. They take no Sythe resources to work on
2. Archival takes no Sythe resources
3. Convenient, live chatting
4. Most people have Skype or Discord

Disadvantages:

1. Imposters
2. Screenshots must be taken
3. Any message may be edited or deleted
4. Require confirmation PMs in scam reports
5. The usually have VoIP, which is not admissible evidence (worse for newcomers)

Advantages of Sythe Conversations:

1. Archived
2. Guarantee of no imposters
3. Cannot edit or delete messages

Disadvantages:

1. Slow
2. Not intuitive to all newcomers compared to Skype or Discord
3. Doesn't update live

What I propose is a chat system similar in style to those on Stack Exchange/Overflow. On these sites the chats allow you to send a message, and it gives you 60 seconds to edit or redact it. After 60 seconds, it's permanently archived. I think a system like this replacing conversations would be beneficial for a few reasons:

1. No realistic chance of imposters
2. No need to download additional programs
3. Live updates increase the speed of negotiations
4. Could make negiotiation more intuitive for newcomers
5. Messages can be edited to reword and fix typos, but not after a minute
6. Removed the need for confirmation PMs

Now, I am NOT proposing a shoutbox. Shoutboxes remove traffic from the forum itself and are public. This system is private (sharable with invitation), and reroutes traffic from offsite dicussion to onsite. Overall, I think this system could make the market safer and more welcoming to newcomers.

• You have 60 seconds to edit or delete a message, and after the 60 seconds are up, the message is unable to be modified.

If I'm reading correctly, would this be similar to Facebook messenger? "Sythe messenger" actually does sound like a good idea if it's easy to implement because of your above points.

 

Yeah, it'd be a similar system to Facebook Messenger, but with the 60-seconds-to-edit compromise (the time can change). As for the triviality of implementing a Sythe Messenger, I'm unsure. I've only ever made peer to peer, and those were in Java, not JS. I imagine if this got approved that Matthew would be the one to work on it.

Not only that but I have sythe convo's that stretch 6+ pages long, and I don't always have my skype/discord open when I'm online browsing Sythe. I really wish we could keep the chats on the website and not have to use outside sources because they have better messaging systems.

 

I hadn't even considered the cyber security aspect of it! I think my longest conversation was 8 pages

 

I recall something about this being a large job, My memory is fuzzy but I've seen a sythe messenger before suggested which must of been denied.

I'd be okay with this as long as the archive timer could be raised- sometimes people may say hey I sent u a PM with my btc address just send whenever your on- if it deletes after 60 seconds this would be impossible.

You'd have to be able to choose 60 seconds, 5 minutes, 10 minutes, 1 hour, 24 hours etc.

If it's not a huge job though, sure support.

 

I think it's a great idea. Having archivable messages would allow definitive proof which is easily searchable and verifiable by staff. Having a chat-based system could also allow developments in future of the chat being usable on a mobile platform, and if they had something like a "read" function you would be able to see when users have acknowledged your message so you wouldn't feel a need to message constantly if a user was worried they were being ignored. I hope that this is heavily considered.

 

I think you misunderstand the proposal. You have 60 seconds after posting to edit/delete, and after 60 seconds the message is set in stone, unable to be modified in any way.

Sounds like a great idea, but verrryyy hard to implement. Do you know of any xenforo add ons that can do the job?

 

I personally don't see any problem with discord/sythe conversation. (Don't take offense, as I do not use the market so my opinion is close to useless).

This seems to be the highest recommended one. I don't know how it would work in terms of what OP suggested, though.

 

I saw that one too but it's 30 euros + 15 euros per 12 months so this is a question only @Sythe can answer. Regardless I support but only he has the ability to do this.

I support! People can be retarded with current system and often make new conversations instead of continuing the previous one leading to a ton of wasted time searching all the conversations looking for log in information for example.
