While I'm sure that recent events have led to mixed feelings I am actually impressed with the steps that Jacmod has taken. Many of you are probably thinking that he simply didn't have the ability to patch the RSbuddy client to make it work with the modified RS client....I don't believe this is true.

No matter what anyone says Jagex taking down bots represents a selfless move. After all the decision from a business stand point was a stupid and shows that behind all of the corporate masque there are still developers that care about the game. I think that bot developers like Jacmod had a change of heart when they realized that Jagex wasn't the money hungry bad guy that made botting justifiable. So before you slam bot clients for promising one thing and not being able to deliver look at this as an opportunity to maybe do something else...

From a technical standpoint the move from object oriented code to giant arrays makes gleaning data via reflection and bcel very difficult...as was said in the interview with Jacmod "a small update to the game represents a huge update to bot developers." We are talking hell on earth for bot developers everywhere.

I would also like to point out that Jagex has promised an update to skills that will make grinding much less necessary. This update may actually make the game fun rather than a monotonous "grind." I look forward to the old days of RS where bots were scarce and skilling was actually worth while.

Hope to see you guys on...

I stand pretty much were you do. JaGex really has stepped it up and gave their community hope.

As for Jacmob and his decision: I approve. He got a job with JaGex, and I believe bots are done for good with him on the team. This is a new age for those of us that actually enjoy the game, and I'm truly excited to see what the future holds for the company, the game, and the users.

I would add you now, but I cannot access RuneScape from work. :p

You, or anyone else feel free to add me, though: Determinism

I still cant believe he got a job with Jagex, that's crazy man, good luck to him! :)

I'd have taken the job at Jagex too. Who wouldn't?
Make money with the chance of getting arrested/sued everyday, or make (probably equal) money legally. Yup, I choose legally, and so did he. GL to him, and I'll just be happy for what bots DID get me.

I don't think it was so much an issue of legality it was more an issue of ethics. If Jagex is going out of their way to end bots at the cost of their own personal gain then the least we can do is stop trying to get an edge using macros... I think Jacmod saw this...plus like someone else said getting a job with Jagex is an opportunity I wouldn't pass up.;)

Not to put too fine a point on this, but:

If the move to erradicate bots really were counter to the commerical interests of Jagex, then in doing so the CEO would (most likely) be breaking the law.

The CEO has a responsibility to his shareholders to maximise company profits, and to act in such a way as to legally maintain the highest returns possible over the longest time possible.

If it can be demonstrated that the CEO of a company has acted against the interests of the company then the shareholders may sue him.

The erradication of the bots has not in fact been against Jagex's commerical interests; they have been losing legitimate players over the botting problem, and thus the return to normacy will increase their sales in the long run.

I don't see that anyone has acted "selflessly" here (not that I advocate they should -- just pointing it out.)

Sythe you make a great point. Perhaps selflessly is a bit strong. I guess it shows that Jagex at least has their priorities in the right place. Although I am sure this will hit them hard in the short term in the long term they will see a return of members.

I'm glad rsbuddy closed down, I don't think rsbuddy could launch a working bot client. Jagex have some really good updates in store and I reckon rs will now be how it was before, fun to play.

now they have less servers too

less servers = less money

Is JaGeX even a public corporation or ESOP? I don't think so. I think it's a small business, and as such, not really subject to market trade laws as there is no market trade.

It's a private company. It has shareholders, it's just not publically listed.

In no way is it a 'small business'. Even a liberal definition of small business would only allow up to 100 employees. Jagex has ~500.

Company law practically everywhere in the world is the same on this point. The CEO of the company must not act in a way which will harm the company's profits. However the only people who can claim legal injury if the CEO does harm the company are the company's shareholders (and sometimes employees too, depending on jurisdiction.) In a very small business with only a couple of shareholders it matters less, because they can all be in agreement about what measures to take. But as I already pointed out, Jagex is not a small business. Thus the CEO would be putting himself on the line doing anything that harms the company's bottom line.

But this is a trivial point of law. Anyone with half a brain can see that removing the bots from the game will improve legitimate subscribership over the long term. Thus it is in their best interest to do, thus they have done it.

Even though this may be the best move that Jagex has done to date, in the long run I'm fairly certain bots will remain in the game, if bots do not remain in the game, goldfarmers from China will ALWAYS be in the game, regardless bots or not.

As long there is a stable price, and a high demand for gold in the game, the amount of money that is paid to a worker in china will be able to be paid off from profits.

Many other games have tried to do the same thing, detect injection, ban and so forth, however there will always be bots, and I see the bot nuke as only a temporary fix, it will be interesting to see what Jagex has next.

Its not that he could not fix it. He fixed it goes to runefest with the finished client and jagex offers him a job and he bs'ed everyone. He can burn to shit for all i care.

The bunch where Jacob says botting is wrong is a bunch of bullshit. He is only doing that because he was bought out by Jagex with a job. Obviously he's going to say that.

He couldn't fix the bot client. People are still getting charged for VIP on rsbuddy even when they have canceled it and aren't being refunded.. how is rsbuddy impressive again?

Probably the first positive thread I've seen about the subject.

Loving all the people glad Jagex killed botting. Why are you posting in the cheating section? And why are your join dates so recent?

Confused...I joined a few months after you and am twice as active in this community...whatever.

This post is in the cheating section because I have and always will support alternatives to grinding. For me I loved the quests, minigames, and over-all community of the game but hated the laborious of nature of the work needed to train skills to achieve those. Grinding was my biggest problem with R.S until botting became so wide spread that one in three players was a computer. I quit the game because of this...

I think it is also important that I point out the futile nature of botting when everyone else has easy access to it. Most bot because they want an edge on the competition. Back in the days of S.C.A.R when botting was much more high-risk, the unfairness of botting was balanced with the risk of being banned. With newer clients like RSbuddy and Nexus the risk was substantially lower and the benefits of using a botting client were so high that not doing so was almost sub-standard. In order to compete in Runescape on the same level as the majority of serious players you had to bot. This update has not killed botting if anything it has helped it by restoring a balance. If you still want to bot their are easy ways of doing it...graphical bots aren't going anywhere regardless of what Jagex says. The majority of the people on the Sythe community are smart enough to utilize these bots...Personally I'm just glad I don't have some 12 year old follow me around calling me "n00b" when all he's done is clicked a fucking button and let a bot do all the work...
