Update: The court date is going to be postponed for a month. The judge said I should get a lawyer.

 

You should go to their house and ask if they will drop the charges if you pay them back right then and there.

 

Agreed. You really don't want to get a lawyer. It's going to cost you over $500 for one.

 

Hmm , I'm not sure on where you live ,but in Vancouver we actually get a free lawyer if it's a case that isn't worth a huge amount

He didn't add more to the agreement - they never picked it up and after a certain amount of time and they don't pick it up it legally becomes his. I don't know how long of a time that is however.

^ This - You should have held onto the laptop longer and asked the police how long you would have had to hold onto it before selling. I think you did the right thing but you should have kept some type of record of it all.

^ This - You should be appointed an attorney by the state (these are the newbies right out of college however) but if you want a better one you have to pay.

you should be getting a court appointed lawyer, in canada (where I live) if you cannot afford a lawyer or are under the age of legal responsibility (18) you should get one

Update. I had court today. I bought an identical laptop as the one I worked on. I was going to tell them that it was their laptop, give it to them, and just get out of this.

But luckily, they didn't show up to court, and the case was dismissed. I'm so happy.

I'm from the UK so may slightly differ for you, but as you didn't have a legally binding signed contract from the other party. There is no way to prove the price mutually agreed on (no contract). You therefore sold his possessions without legal entitlement, so in the eyes of the law you were in the wrong.

 

Family sounds like a shithole. Find all the proof of past conversations with him, and mention how the police told you they were supposed to pay you. This sounds extremely lame dude, sorry to hear it

You might be getting sued to civil law, the most they can do is tell you to pay it back, you can tell them everything you said, and that you said after some time if they didn't pay you would sell it; and they disregarded the message.

Glad to hear you escaped this, but in the future you probably don't want to lie in court. Trying to convince a judge that a new laptop (with no files on it whatsoever?) was the kids old laptop would probably only get you into deeper trouble.

 

Remember, the "oral agreement" goes both ways. They got no case, and neither do you. "You sold our laptop" What laptop?

 

Lucky. Buying an identical laptop would only have worked if you lost the case and had to replace it. You sold property that did not belong to you, which I can understand why, but it's still illegal. Lucky day for you, cept now you have an extra laptop.
