If You Won The Lottery

So, the New York Powerball is 1.3 BILLION dollars right night. I never play the lottery, and RARELY do scratchoffs, but for this I decided why not. The odds are astronomically low, but hey...someone always wins right?

What would you do if you won 1.3b cash? You'd walk away with about 600m cash after taxes because NYS sucks but what would you do?

I'd probably take a year or two off entirely and travel with my girl, definitely propose. Get a house, get a new car, new wardrobe etc. (nothing absolutely insane because that's how they all go broke). I'd put my money in a high interest bank account and live off of that. Eventually I'd probably get a job from home, or start my own business.

What about you guys?

 

Put 1/10 in my bank to blow however I wanted.

Put some in stocks, aggressive mutual funds, precious metals, bitcoin, etc. Live off of the growth.

Start a venture capital firm and fund compelling startups. Give generously but after I have everything else in check.

 

That's really odd... because Florida's power ball is 1.3B too... I thought the jackpots were only state-wide

 

They really take more than half in tax?

I would probably still finish school but do it in style. You know drive a porsche 911 to class and such. Everyone at this goddamn school already has a fancy car though so it's nothing special.

 

Accept that much money and you're the "1%" as they like to say. If you have money expect to be ass raped by taxes.

 

I don't earn a lot now but have still managed to save a shitload of cash. I'm a simple person, so I don't see my life changing a whole lot with that much cash. I'd likely multiply it via various investments and start a charity or something with low administrative fees.

The lump sum payout is only 800M and about 300-400M of that will be taxes so you are a lot less well off than you think.

The first year is the time that you should found a charity and give as much as you want to it. 200M out of that 800M will drop your taxes to 600M and you will be left with at least 300M so its not as huge of a hit.

 

Finish up with school, continue to pursue my career, live well below my means and retire early to travel and spend time with those closest to me.

Play the stock game for the rest of my life, make some investments. Buy a house next to a popular celebrity on the waterfront.

 

Set up my parents so they'll never have to worry about anything. Finish College, I'd start up a business of some sort. Other than that, I'd donate to several charities and then proceed to continue my studies.

 

I would buy 3 houses in a few specific places I like a lot. A couple cars. Then I'd proceed to explore as much of the globe as possible. Then have kids and live a regular life. Pretty much the same as I plan to do now.

 

Buy homes for parents and close relatives. After that I would just sit back and chill. I don't see myself having to spend more than 5% of the winnings after all that is done.

 

Quit my job. But otherwise, nothing different. There's really nothing I want to do that I can't afford, even with meager pay. It's more than enough for everything I want + savings.

I wouldn't want to win...can you imagine the target on your head after that?

 

I'd keep my name private for awhile until all the fuss about it died down. (security main reason)

I'd finish with school for sure. I'd then invest into some stocks or even possibly buy a company out that has proven themselves.

 

I've thought about this. If I were single I'd act as though my personal business ventures have been successful and slowly start buying nicer "stuff". Car, house, clothing etc.

 

Get the best lawyer I could find and tell nobody.
