My friend just got back from a three week vacation in Iceland. He told me that when he tipped the waitress at a restaurant he had went to go eat dinner at, they said it was an insult for doing so. Dafuq. Does anyone know why trying to give someone free money an insult in Iceland. Their odd customs... Haha.

Americas one of the weird countries that people tip at restaurants. Most of the time a tip is just applied to the bill. But regardless, still weird you don't take free money.

I guess they have pride in their work, in the UK they add a "service charge" what I don't agree on. If you think the service is good then you pay then a good tip, if the service is bad then you don't tip.

In Australia, tipping is completely optional, in fact, I don't see it happen that often at all. I find it very odd that someone would refuse to take free money though. Did he ask why?

Hmm, if i have pride in my work i wouldnt be insulted by someone being so happy with it they insist on "tipping" me in fact that would just reassert my pride and i would gladly take the tip. So for me the "pride" argument isnt working, the only reason i could see him/her refusing the tip is if they felt it was charity and not a reward for a job done well. Maybe he/she just though you were condescending! Or like what was said above me maybe their tips are already figured into bill and then they all split them.
