If so, assume he invents some amount, x, at 5%. Then, he invests twice as much (2x) at 8%.

Therefore, his total earnings would be .05x + .08(2x) = 540. Multiply this out, and you get .21x = 540, or x = 2571.43. So, he invests $2571.43 at 5%, and twice that, $5142.86 at 8%.
