Hey all, just out of interest i was just wondering how i would acctually go about making a game like runescape, i dont want to know what runescape uses or anything like that just what i would have to do/ would need to try and make one.
First, what kind of program would i need to design the character and item models/animation etc?
Then how would i acctually get it onto the internet or w.e?
And how would i make the level up process? E.g. 1 attack gives 4 exp 20exp till next level?
Yes, i am a retard when it comes to things like this, but id really like to know out of interest if anyone could help Thanks. ~Roach

Uh.. like your own Runescape servers? Or just games in general? I think you'd need to learn Java, which would require a lot of work. I don't really know much either to be honest.

But, one thing you could check out would be the RPG maker series. It basically lets you build games. Its just something to try out, because if you get tired of something like this which makes making a game very easy, then you might not want invest any time into trying to learn how to make a full fledged monster game.

Nah, not a runescape pserver, a completly new game but just like runescape as in browser game not amazing graphics

I know there is a few programs around to make games and stuff.
I can't remember any of them except for um is it Rgxp or something?

If you where really serious about making a game, you would need to do software design courses. Programming a game is pretty complex. Im pretty sure runescape would have taken along time to be made. andrew gower would be a sick arse programmer.

Wrong section. RS uses Java. I suggest you lurking moar about Moparscape

Would mopar acctually help me understand making a game though? or is it just a quick fix? And like i said i dont want to replicate RS so it doesnt neccesarilly have to be Java does it? And is their any programs that i can just mess about in to design modles e.g http://www.softimage.com/? or do i need advance skills for them?

Mate, you're nowhere near ready to make a game.

Learning the programming skills to make a game, even in easy languages such as Java (of which RuneScape is written) it takes an unbelievable amount of time to get far enough to develop a game. I've been programming for about 2 years solid on .Net and C-based languages, and I can't even write a game using an easy open source game engine.

More or less, you also need a team of developers to maintain and update your game. You need modelers, concept artists, programmers, security programmers (especially for MMORPG's like RS), map creation artists/developers, script writers, support staff and so the list goes on. I believe Jagex has many people in their team just to update and maintain RuneScape, and RuneScape isn't a terribly big game.

Long story short, unless you have a fair amount of money, you're not going to get close to making a successful game.

Sorry to cut it to you kid, everyone has aspirations. Game dev just happens to take years to be ready for.

I know im no where near making a game, thats why in my first post i said "out of interest" I'm just waning to know the basic outlines of what you ned to do, what kind of software you need to make the designs in, what you have to do to acctually make them into a game (script the designs in java?) just really basic stuff that im wanting to know

well rs is java based so im guessing start off with Turing for some background then move on the java scripting. as for the graphics i couldnt tell you but there is software for that

RuneScape is a Java game. This piece of information plus Google will yield you all you need to know.
