How To Tell if your name is rare or not

With the recent thread being locked due to it being out of date in the RuneScape Names Sales section, I believe there is a need for it to be redone.

Any big name seller will tell you how often a PM, post, or skype add comes in with someone saying its a very very rare name, and it turns out to be "Comin 4 ya" or something to the likes. This is frustrating for a name seller to have to explain to the user every single time about the classification of their name. In addition, on the other side, it also helps potential sellers be able to tell if their name is worth trying to sell or not. People who don't have the experience in the name market will often PM someone with experience or post on the "Name Price Check Topic" asking for a name's worth. So I believe this is necessary to help guide these people so that they will be able to distinguish between a rare name, and a non-rare name.

Counter argument: Well this is a free market, so they should be able to sell their name if they want to.

True, and no one said anything about them not being able to sell their name. Should they chose to, that is entirely up to them; however, this is simply a means of education. For some, they will ask if their name is rare or not, or if it's worth their time trying to sell. For some, they'll brazenly attempt to sell it regardless. But simply having the knowledge out there so that they can be able to distinguish the name for themselves is important.

 

I feel this is a good idea and very much needed. With tons more names in the market nowadays since the release it is already a bit hard to get rid of shit has
it is. I think this will to help eliminate some of the spam threads off the forums of people trying to sell random stuff. It's a tad annoying.

Well of course it's a free market but realistically there isn't any demand for them (shitty/worthless names). People don't buy worthless level three accounts with no stats. One can identify the stats in an account sale thread and make a judgement as to how valuable the account is, with names it is a bit trickier since not everyone has the expertise and experience in the field, so I feel that it could be a worthwhile contribution to the market.

 

Who determines the rarity? If I think a name is rare, why should I be criticised otherwise?

 

Rarity in regards to names in the runescape community is defined as simplistic and original words or phrases (think dictionary words, the shorter and more common, the more sought after, thus making them "rarer" in a sense) this also includes 2 digit names like (q6, 51, wb) as there are simply less combinations of 2 digit phrases then 3, 4, or 5 digits.

Sure you may think your name "Dragonslayr8" is rare, and in a way you are correct since there can only be 1 of every display name, but the primary attribute of rare names is that there is a higher demand/they are more sought after, and it's easy to say that a name like "Bob" is more desirable than your "Dragonslayr8".

 

Example: Tv sitcom names, anime character names.. Etc

To me I would think those are rare depending on the quality of the show it's originated from. I think it's snobbish to create implicit rules and apply them on everyone else. >_<

 

I think that someone would have to make the thread in advance and then forward it to a moderator or any rank really. I don't think just anyone's going to sit down and actually take the time to make this.

Great. I think this thread was unnecessary in a sense that you'd create the thread anyway. I think this was just your way of making it official.

Either way, I change my vote from not sure to yes.

Well this was kind of the gauge if people thought one was needed. I had started on it, but I had only put about 30 minutes into it, until I saw that people were going to support this, have put around 6 solid hours into it, and it's getting close ... ish
