How to set a program's file extension association.

This is a guide on how to set the program that will by default open a certain type of file, denoted by its file extension (filename.extension).
This guide is for Windows XP, though other Windows operating systems have a similar procedure.
This guide only works for filetypes which do not have associations set by Windows or any other program.

You need to find a file of the type that you want to be opened by a specific program. In my example, I use an "ifo" filetype, which does not have a default program assigned to it.

First, right-click on the file's icon:


Next, select the shown option:


You should see a screen like this come up. Make sure the "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file" checkbox is checked.


Next, find the program you want to use to open the file on the list. In my example, I use wordpad.


If your desired program is not on the list but you have it installed on your computer, click the "Browse" button to search for it. The Program Files folder should show up:


Finally, once you are done, press the OK button here again:
