    How to install Ubuntu 7 successfully.

    Hello Sythe users, this is 'The Trader' with a great guide on how to install and use Ubuntu 7 successfully. I'll be describing what Ubuntu is, how to use it, and how to keep windows partitioned, so you lose no data.

    Ok, Ubuntu is a Linux based operating system. Servers, Networks & Companys use this over windows because its much more secure, and advanced. Linux is not for noobs, retards, or mentally challenged people.
    Its the hardest thing to grasp ever. The first month of having it installed will suck, but the second month will go good, i assure you.

    Lots of people would love to experiment with linux, and most probably you do aswell but, your afraid if you install ubuntu, something severe could happen such as you lose all the data on windows, or it doesnt install successfully, leaving you with no windows & no ubuntu.

    You might even not have a Live Disc, thats fine! This guide does not need a CD, as its a program that does everything for you. You dont need to do anything, you also have the choice for the partition you want for Ubuntu.

    Ok, so let the guide begin;
    First go to - http://wubi-installer.org/ & click the Download (Beta) image. This will download a small file called wubi. This is the best program for people that dont know how to partition successfully.

    Second part;
    Run wubi. There are a few things you need to fill in and i'll describe them all.
    Installation Drive - This is usually C: - You should keep it default always.
    Installation Size - I suggest putting this to 15; This will take 15gb space from windows, and let ubuntu have it, so you can keep the files seperate.
    Desktop Enviroment - Since your a begginer, i suggest 'Ubuntu' - I dont suggest Xubuntu or Kubuntu at this exact moment, as its in beta.
    Language - English is default.
    Username - The root username, case SenSitiVe! I suggest putting this something like; home
    Password - The root password, case SenSitiVe! I suggest putting this something familiar.

    Third part;
    Ok, click Install. This will download Ubuntu automatically for you & then install it. It could take about 1 hour 30 minutes to download (Its 600mb) depending on your internet speeds.

    Once it has finished downloading, it will set it all up for you! You do absolutely nothing. It will ask you to reboot windows. Reboot NOW, do not wait as it could corrupt files.

    Fourth part;
    On the boot, it will ask -
    Windows xp professional
    Ubuntu

    Press the down button on your keyboard & press enter. This will now run Ubuntu. Your not done YET though. It will now install a few more things, YOU do nothing though as its 100% automated.

    Once it hits 100% it will reboot ubuntu again. Do the boot thing again, go to Ubuntu. Its now finished installing.

    For the username; Home
    For the password; password

    - THAT IS NOT THE DEFAULT USERNAME & PASSWORD!! You MUST PUT THE THINGS YOU FILLED IN.

    You are now running Ubuntu. I suggest going to - http://www.ubuntu.com/ then joining the forums, they'll help you along the way.

    Thanks,
    - The Trader.

    This guide was written by me, and proof from Zamurick as i was speaking to him whilst writing this. It took me 30 minutes to write the guide, i'll be including images soon!

    I disagree with large swathes of this guide. For one thing, Linux is for everyone, not just geeks (And especially not people who think wubi makes them clever). For another, xubuntu and kubuntu are not desktop environments, and XFCE and KDE are most certainly not in beta. I also don't believe that either the first month of Linux sucks, or that it is the "hardest thing ever".

    Son, you show me a non-trivial use of pointers that isn't hard as shit to understand and write, and I'll concede you that Linux is "the hardest thing ever". Linux has come a long way, it's no longer the "geek operating system".

    And why release this 3 weeks before the next version of Ubuntu comes out?

    ^Exactly

    I've tried Ubuntu and Kubuntu. Kubutu/fail. Who needs GNOME anyway?

    I always go back to windows because I need my photoshop and flash.

    Install packages? Weeeeeeeeeeeeeell, you could;
    Code:
    # apt-get install package
    # netpkg package
    # wget http://site.com/package.tar.gz && tar -xvjf - && cd package && ./configure; make && make all; make install

    And that's all the cmd I remember for packages from the distributions I'm familiar with.

    Nice googling skills? Are you joking? I demonstrated an extremely limited set of commands to build software. If that's "googling skills"-exclusive, I think we might have found the problem with Ubuntu. The user.

    Yes but originally you said "Btw, the first poster, tell me, how do you install packages", so technically you asked him to tell you, and he did tell you. So you called him out and then he backed himself up when you told him to shut the fuck up. I mean he did what you said and proved you wrong that he did, in fact, know exactly what to do.
    But the guides decent, good job.

    Installing shit on Ubuntu is more difficult for the average user. Don't bother to BS me with shit saying the first few times is easy.

    Erm, on vanilla (Regular, for your windows kids :p) Ubuntu you just go Applications-> Add/Remove programs, and you can use a check list to install common applications. With everything else, it's even easier than Windows, because you don't need to cross-reference it with anti-viral sites.
    You can do that without wubi ¬_¬
