    How scammers ruin the Community?

Unfortunately account trading is complicated by the recovery process. This gets exponentially more complicated if it's an account that's been resold several times. You'll see that people are very hesitant to buy accounts with gold or money because there's such a high risk the account will be recovered or locked.

When it comes to account trading, reputation is everything. A highly trusted user can sell the same account as you for 2-3x more simply due to their reputation. It's essentially collateral and makes the transaction more even on both sides.

I think the Sythe Market has really matured over the past 10 years. When I started here it was chaos. Scammers were absolutely everywhere. You'd make an offer to sell gold and the fake offers / scammers would outweigh the legit users 20-1. Today there's obviously still scammers around but I think most people trade smarter due to the collective knowledge the community has built up as a whole. It also helps that we have so many good services being run by members on Sythe now.

You can find an extremely reliable provider for almost anything; skilling, firecapes, gold, items in basically every major game, boosting, etc. etc. The reliable sellers can charge a bit of a premium, but it's well worth it for peace of mind and professionalism. Anyone who tries to save 10-20% by purchasing from an untrusted user is taking a risk, and usually they know that. At least when they have the option to choose between a highly trusted user and a new user, they are making that decision themselves, instead of not having the choice.

Ultimately you need to be responsible for yourself when trading. You need to expect the worst and be careful. Trading online for a long time can make you see some of the worst in people though! It becomes harder to trust people around you (even IRL) because you're so used to dealing with sketchy individuals. Even though 95% of the people I deal with are totally legit and easy to work with, the other 5% burn memories in your brain. Be careful diving too far into this world, you won't look at people the same.

Thanks for taking the time to write all this.

I agree with you. As I mentioned in my earlier comment, I do think that the RuneScape account market probably wasn't the best choice to start with. I would guess that it most likely is the one with most scams involved. Although with a little bit of dedication I feel that I'll be able to get through the early struggle - I already managed to sell 5 accounts since I posted this thread which really helped me out!

The thing that people who want to grow forget is to have patience. Everyone starts somewhere and even people like me have endured the "fuck off scammer" or the "you'll have to go first cause u have no rep" situations when they first started off. I remember in 2014 i had a dispute with lester (known goldseller to oldskoolers) because i bought gold from him via Paypal and he started calling me a scammer because he thought i was gonna chargeback on him. I got scammed tons of times in the progress of making a certain name for myself but yet here we are, years later, still going hard and still growing. It's all how you look at it. Everyone their starting road is different but one thing we all have in common is that we all start from the bottom and the road up the hill is a bumpy one. How you endure your path is what's gonna define your business in the future. Fact remains, patience is key.

I found the community quite pleasant when I joined "besides the twc as soon as I joined @Wortel lol". I fell heavily into the crypto currency discussions and hell I guess I just fit right in. I got a good feel for the community and donated and just kept talking to folks now I feel at home.

I'm starting to get more involved in the community now that I know a few people. Honestly scammers on this forum are really retarded its like they know how desperate some people are and they just take advantage of it.

Most of the scam reports I read make me think "now how the hell did he miss that about this retarded scammer". I just think if people thought about somethings that go on leading to the trades that get them scammed their would be a lot less scamming going on.

Yeah, I think starting off its best to start off from outside of the market. Makes your way to the "top" easier and you most likely won't have the same kind of trouble getting started in the market later. As Gen said, someone whos taken part in the community events and helped out in here is probably gonna have more luck in the market even as a Newcomer.

Meh. Depends how you play the trade and what you're buying. I've been scammed by high PC people (back in 2007) and low PC people, old join date, and new join date. Experience helps.

DNT plaguing the site is more harmful for Sythe's image than any scam that I can remember. There have been scam reports present since the beginning, yet here we are.

Sythe tends to go through periods of high drama, like a spike, and then it sorta floats off for a while, a bit like an unpredictable girlfriend.

As a newcomer that has done a decent amount of successful transactions, I understand the stigma associated with newcomers. Personally, I'll participate in meaningful conversations, but my end goal isn't to socialize. I think that this negative perception of newcomers decreases the overall scams. Changing the current perception of newcomers could have negative consequences.

Well said. I went through the same exact issues starting up, but over time it gets better as long as you keep your head up, and that goes for anyone who's interested in getting into the market aspect of Sythe. It really sucks because yes every reputable user today has started from nothing at some point, but at the end of the day you'll always have thieves lurking the market trying to screw you over for as much money as they can. I don't think going first to newcomers is necessarily a bad idea for other new members getting into the market, however I'd definitely trade cautiously rather than trading all my money at once to them (if I were in their shoes). Increments are always an option, and if the person refuses to trade in a style of your comfort level, then just walk away. Middleman are always available to help you out with your trades as well. I feel like the main issue is users being desperate, and rushing trades when they should be more patient, and cautious, which leads to more of these sort of scenarios occurring where they get scammed, and lose motivation to use the site, and quit. Unfortunate to see, but not really much more we can do other than help inform them as I said, so that these situations never happen again, or are at least less likely to happen.

The biggest thing I have realized for myself is not getting a response. I offered a free firecape on my service thread for a week now, no takers. Besides that, I have talked to well over 5 people, given them a decently good quote with no risk of their items being scanned, and I simply won't get a response in return. I don't know why - they have probably either gotten a better quote or choose to go with a more trusted service which is perfectly fine with me.

Besides that, despite that I am a re-welcomed user on a new account, I feel as if this market is more saturated than it was the 5-6 years ago I was here. Which can be good! Then again, it makes the newcomers harder to build their name in this community. After all, this is a free market - which runs by a work hard, play hard mentality. The more you put in, the more you get out of it.

    Cheers!

Scammers will keep scamming because its to much work to be legitimate for most people.

    Simple.

Nobody "wants" to be a scammer but they do it because its the easy road.

It's the same with Runescape Name Sales. We're here selling names for billions of gold and the same name in the hands of a newcomer can't sell them for a hundred. The risk of the name not only being sniped, but also recovered, is far too high for most people to want to take. People pay premium for safety, just like account sales.

    Edit:

I had a decent reputation offsite before I started on here, it was incredibly frustrating not getting any deals that I thought I would be able to get due to my good standing in other communities. Donating $100 really helped that, though. I saw a huge increase in people contacting me to buy/sell gold, names, accounts, whatever it was.

All it takes is patience and a big grind to build the reputation you need, and scamming is never worth it.
