How do u feel about the removal of gambling?

Pretty sad, gambling was one of the nicest part in runescape and used by so many people but Jagex was not wrong. They did the good thing since there is a BUNCH of scammers out there.

I had no problem with gambling, people knew the risks. I didn't like the massive spam at the GE though. They should have just added a Casino or something for people that wanted to gamble.

Gambling made me make a few GeePee but it did ruin the eco and a lot of RWT was happening.

Think it is better of being out of the game.

The economy is based on an activity. You cant tell if its bad or good... Its just the way it is. All activities in runescape are changing the economy. By saying Gambling ruined the economy, its like if u say the activities in rs are ruining the economy. That makes no sense because it is based on EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM! You cant say if its bad or not...

 

How did gambling affect the economy? Are you an economist? People saying that gambling "ruined" the economy just use that as an abstract excuse for why it affected them.

Please explain how gambling affected the economy.

I'm A* a-level economist and studying undergraduate economics.

It affected economy in a way all our governments would perceive to be negative but I wouldn't say it ruined it.

-Created a greater imbalance of wealth - hosts had far more cash than any legit player could ever obtain without staking/flowering/dicing/etc. If there had been ceteris paribus this would have led to massive inflation in the price of 'rare' commodities. Meaning certain items would be unobtainable to the many yet hoarded by the few.
-Caused many 'legit' players to quit once they risked hard earned banks and lost. This would have been most noticeable in mid level CBs. High levels losing banks is trivial in some ways as they can easily make bank back PVMing. Mid levels may never have made bank back. This would have caused, as was the case, a massive skew in the distribution of active player levels toward the upper end. Marginally less noticeable due to 'pure' alts.

Reason data is hard to point to for point 1 is because ceteris paribus did not exist, as it never does. Prices were kept down by the high level of bots in the game producing excess commodity goods. Whilst this would not apply to rares the following point would, as players quit after losing bank demand for party hats would naturally have decreased causing a fall in the price. Further, once the hosts had 1,2,3 sets of each rare why buy more? They needed incredibly large working capital to cover bets. As such it was best for them to not buy excess amounts of rares when previously the only thing to spend your money on when you had such wealth would have been rares. Now that rares are the only thing to do with their excess cash once again, the price has rised.

The past months have seen a large decrease in player base, levels of bots and the removal of gambling. As such you cannot point to the data of party hats and say look gambling didn't hurt anything. There are too many other contributing factors.

TLDR;
Gambling hurt, not destroyed the economy.

 

First, thanks for writing this.

My opinion : ok, i know the economy has changed because of gambling but the change isnt necesserly bad! Might bring down phats but bring up something else. All that I say is that you cant assume its bad. Theres much thing to say about gambling beside this stupid reason of "bad economy". People cant defend their opinion of gambling, they only copy others and say "bad economy".

 

I personally enjoy RS without gambling to this degree. It makes going to the GE bearable again since I don't have to turn my public chat off.

 

I agree for the GE thing but u didnt find watching betters and clans gambling was entertaining? I watched alot of big bets and was pretty fun
