Put a pen on paper is a good start.

Does the book go through many time stages?

If you can, set up an annotating chart:

    Example:

Red Highlighting: Symbolism + Red Tab
Green Highlighting: Theme + Green Tab
Yellow Highlighting: Plot development + Yellow Tab
Blue Highlighting: Characterization + Blue Tab

Etc. If you can mark in the book, do as above.... it'd make things a bit easier and make actual the journal writing process a lot easier.

As for the journal, start on the first page. Give a symnopsis of what you think the story is going to about. Take clues and hints from the cover and the information on the back.

After that, set your next few pages up in Cornell Style format (Little left side, bigger right side, spaces on the bottom for a summary) on each page... Write some facts on the right side and questions to go along the left... It'd be a handy study tool for quizzes and whatnot.

Also, take notes as you go through the book... I found that it's a lot easier when you take notes because you understand many parts of the book better.

ALSO: DEFINE ALL THE WORDS THAT ARE UNFAMILIAR TO YOU. IT'S IMPORTANT FOR YOU TO UNDERSTAND ALL THE DETAILS.
