How do I calculate my GPA?

I need help calculating my GPA. I know there's hope GPA and then there is the GPA you use for college. How do I find what my GPA to use towards applying to college is? What all counts?

 

What are the grades that you've gotten in your classes in your years in High School?

Non-weighted

Weighted

Both are sent to colleges. Weighted means you have advanced or AP classes. You add all those numbers together and divide my the number of classes.

 

Go on your school website and go to wherever your grades are, or find your transcript. It should be given there for you.

Or ask your counselor.

 

I've had both AP and regular. Plus I've never seen it out of 5. And I'm wondering which classes count. For example I know health/pe/orchestra and crap doesn't count..

I should visit my counselor... but it takes like a week just to have a meeting.

Ask for your transcript. It will say it on there.

 

It's out of 5. That's how people get 4.0+ GPAs. I think you get an extra .25 for Honors and .5 extra for AP. Just ask for your transcript.

 

IB Higher levels give the boost to GPA as well, though I'm not sure of the magnitude of the boost.

 

And I'm pretty sure that colleges (in the US) only look at the unweighted GPA

 

Because people can get a 110% in an AP...

If you have an AP class A=5 B=4 C=3 D=1 F=0, atleast in my school..
Normal is A=4 B=3 C=2 D=1 F=0

So right now i have AP Bio let's say i have a B in it, normally it would be calculated as a 3, but since it's AP it's worth 4.

And let's say i'm taking Calculus, I have a C in it, it's not AP so it's worth 2.

You would do this for every class, then divide the number by the total of classes.

And if you're applying for colleges, which i just finished doing..
Are you doing early action? Heh, that's due on Monday, get on it!

But you most likely want your combined GPA of 9-12.. in that case ask for your transcript at your school.

 

When you apply you get to choose which one you would prefer to use.

 

AP give more credit since apparently they are considered advanced placement, a little more difficult.

Also some colleges give you college credit for AP classes you've done good in..
For example, 3/5, 4/5, 5/5 in the AP exam, A in the class etc.

 

In my Highschool(I'm a senior now) it's this:

A(in AP classes): 5 points
A(in Honor class): 4.5 points
A(in Normal class): 4 points
B(in AP classes): 4 points
B(in Honor class): 3.5 points
B(in Normal class): 3 points

And so on. To calculate it, add up all of your grades

ie. A-A-A-B-C-B-A-B

All normal classes would be 4+4+4+3+2+3+4+3= 27 Then divide that by 8(averaging it)

And you would have a 3.375 GPA.

 

You should make sure at your school, because in my school we take honors, but we don't add the .5 bonus

 

I have made sure, my GPA at the moment is a 4.25.
