Sythe rules regarding locked runescape accounts?

I bought a rare name long ago from someone on sythe and recently tried logging into it, the account is locked and it says "we've(Jagex) have removed the email set to the account because we think the account is stolen". I tried contacting the guy who is the original owner and I trust him enough to take his word that he's not able to recover it. The password change request keeps getting denied. I've had accounts being locked before, but have never seen the email being removed, usually they i would send a password change request and they would send me the password through email.

So my question is if I'm to sell an account and it gets locked(with email being from the account removed) and i'm not able to recover it, where do I stand as a seller? Do i have to refund my buyer? what are the sythe rules regarding it?

Yeah, if you sell it, you're liable if it becomes unusable for whatever reason. You'd have to refund him.

That's interesting. So even if it occurred 5 years after the purchase the seller would be responsible? This kind of picked at my brain, lol - thanks for bringing it up!

Well if you resell an account you are perfectly aware of the risks. It is normal you are being held responsible if it wasn't the case everyone would just claim well it wasn't originally mine so I'm sorry.

I'm sure theres a reasonable time frame.

If I sell an account to B, and B sells to C, C gets it locked, would I be held responsible for unlocking the account for B & C? That would seem extremely unfair.

Also, if it's a full year later or something, why would I have to get it unlocked? It's effectively more your account than mine if you've used it for that long of a time.

Well it is dependent upon how credible your information you provided to the buyer is. If it doesn't work and the buyer cannot successfully recover the account, after a year or so, it should be courtesy to at least attempt to recover/unlock the account.

In the case of resales, I think it's the most current seller who's liable, but this probably varies case-by-case. Still though, if A sells to B sells to C, and B cannot recover the account after C loses access, A will probably be held liable or at least responsible for trying to recover the account for B. This is why you don't sell accounts that you don't have control over.

    How long is long ago?

Jagex have been cracking down on traded accounts recently, so it's not unexpected to come across this event. If by chance, the original owner is not able to recover the account himself, he or she should not be held liable.

I remember trading an account that I created which held a rare name. I threw in the account as a bonus for the trade. The only things that were in my favor in attempt to recover the account was the log in email of the account, and my ip address. The account ended up getting locked 3 months post trade, and I did him the favor of attempting to recover it. I could not recover the account for a few reasons.

    1. My IP Address was not the same
    2. I had no other information of the account
    3. I did have the log in email, but that wasn't enough to recover it

After many unsuccessful attempts, would I be responsible for what happened?

I believe each account trade is handled on a case by case basis.

You are responsible for refunding the person you sold it to but the person who sold it to you is responsible for refunding you
