Wow, 70 years sure is a long time for hacking computers and causing UPTO $700, 000.000 worth of damage.

Hopefully he'll post something on the net about what he found .. I REALLY want to know about what he claimed to be looking for (aliens) ... I've wondered that all my life thinking whether they were real or not, and if the US government was hiding something.

Anyways, poor guy.

70 years for hacking and doing 700k in damages, but you can do the "ultimate crime" and kill someone and get off with a punishment as low as 4 years.

Agreed, this guys skills should be used for an Advantage.

 

Was he targetting government computers, or did he just stumble onto a network that happened to have government computers on it? I'm sure he had to put in a little bit of effort to make his way onto that, unless I'm overestimating the government once again.

 

If he's still alive when he gets out it's likely that he'll be employed by Microsoft or some other software development company.

It's kinda nonsence though that he had done it, or even attempted to. He should have took his knowledge and offered it.

 

He was seeking existing top secret evidence of alien life, so yes he was targeting government networks.

 

I love how half the people here think the damage bullshit is real, or the fact that he's getting trialed for it is true.

Guys, think for a second... This person VERY WELL knew what he was doing, as well as the fact that IF he left ANY kind of mark, they would find him immediatly...
You really think he would "damage" (delete, corrupt) files? He clearly is smart enough to realize you don't fuck with such vital data.

He's getting trialed for "knowing" top-secret information. Who knows what he DID found on their computers, and the USA are simply trying to cover it up "making up" this 700,000 dollar excuse.

As they said it themselves, he had acces to vital information (Probably including some "Mars"-facts nobody should know) which was hidden from public, and USA government simply wants to make sure he doesn't share that information. (70 years for "Only" 700,000 dollars? I've known cases in which people drove tanks into buildings, causing well over 1,000,000 dollars damage -tank alone probably is half of that- and onyl getting 10 years)

I hope they don't send him to USA, otherwise he'll stay there for a LONG time. (Till he dies pretty much)
