People buy them because it typically is more comfortable when lifting the bars/dumbbells that can leave calluses, so they wear those to help reduce that. Sometimes if the weight is getting pretty heavy, they may wear those for some other benefits that I'm unaware of, but I'm sure it gives better grip.

yeah figured it was for grip, but was thinking if it benefits why don't all people wear them, your reply makes sense thoe.

Calluses are manly and a sign of lifting and hard work, so people don't wear gloves in order to get them. I never understood why people wear gloves, maybe to preserve their bitch-hands? Some people do wear wrist wraps, which is for better grip/making sure you can keep the bar from falling.

They're good if you don't want calluses, to tear your hands etc. The major downfall is those same guys most likely have piss-poor grip strength compared to someone who does not use gloves. Unless you're lifting an ungodly amount of weight, you're fine without them.

Used to wear gloves when I went to the gym. Even tough I hate getting calluses people don't look at me like I'm a pussy or newcomer anymore.

Well as mentioned above gloves can be good for grip and avoid having calluses... You would see my hands haha, I started using "grip gloves" they much more comfortable... you basically wrap it trough your thumb and it covers ur palm, they're cheap and good!

sorry for bumping oldish thread but needed a reply.

OT; after going with/without gloves, i can honestly say i agree with you, with gloves on just saves so much roughness on my hands, thanks all for replys ^^

people think if you wear gloves it makes you a pussy, if you're comfortable wearing them, wear them. It prevents you from getting callus on your palm.

Gloves could be nice to give a easier grip for weaker wristed people. Also the textured metal does grate on your hands and if you're lifted a lot of weight it can also pinch a bit sometimes. I might consider trying gloves, but I imagine they'd get sweaty and gross pretty quick. Probably best to stay free handed and just use straps to strengthen the wrists.
