Step1: Go to C:\Program Files\World of Warcraft. You'll probably want to make a shortcut to get here, because this is where most of the work will take place. Create a folder on your desktop called "Blizzard WoW Realmlist". Copy "realmlist.wtf" from the WoW program files and paste it into the folder you just made on the desktop. Now that your backup is made, you're ready to go ahead.
Step2: Now, open Notepad. Go to File -> Open and open C:\Program Files\World of Warcraft\realmlist.wtf. To see the file, you may need to switch Files of Type: from .txt to All Files. Delete everything in the file. Open your internet browser of choice and find the web page of the server you want to go to. Once you're at the site, find the realmlist code. It is typically found on the main page or a connection guide. It will look something like: "set realmlist *****" with no quotation marks and ***** being whatever the particular server says it is. Take the code, copy it, and paste it into your open notepad file. Save, and exit.
Step3: Now you'll want a backup of the private server data. Make a desktop folder called "[Whatever the private server is called] WoW Realmlist" and put it next to the program files shortcut and Blizzard back-up. Copy and paste the new realmlist.wtf into it. Now, all the technical work is done. On the private server's webpage, there will be a registration form. Make an account (Username and password DOES NOT have to be the same as your official one), click Register or Finish or whatever, then wait a few minutes for the server to update. Then, turn on World of Warcraft like you normally would, but using your private server account name and password and play.
