    Questions on a class

So after looking over some courses available at my school, I saw Java Programming. I like the idea of being a game programmer, but I have no knowledge of programming, would this be a good starting place? It doesn't say its an advanced course, just a basic one. Would this help out any? Has anyone taken any classes on Java? I like Java because, Runescape, Minecraft, etc. I literally have no prior knowledge at all, and would like to possibly get into it.

(Inb4 java section, that shits dead)

So, you're entering Freshmen year I suppose?
I'd suggest a higher than average knowledge of math, and more than basic information with computers. At my school it recommended you take at least Algebra 1, and information processing.

    Questions on a class

Java is going to be extremely tough for you if it's your first language. As for game programming, Java isn't only used for that, it's used for multi-platform programming so it's useful for making games, although I wouldn't suggest it. I'd suggest C++ instead, or even C# because of Microsoft's handy XNA Framework and easy-to-use DirectX class libraries.

If you were to take this course, you'd have to devote a lot of your free time to expanding your knowledge into what you want. The basic course will teach you what you need to understand and use code you find efficiently, but it will in no way teach you to start making games right off the bat. I'd say a semester of that course + 2 semesters or so of daily Java learning on your own time would get you prepped for game development, depending how dedicated you are and how well your mindset fits the criteria of being a programmer.

If you'd like more info PM me, I just so happen to program quite a bit of Java.

    Questions on a class

I'm taking a java class in college right now actually. It's a good class, it's not that difficult.

Like it's been said java isn't practical in a lot of situations for making games. And you definitely won't be making any games in the class.

Before I started all I knew was some extremely basic HTML, and I'm understanding java fine. It's not a bad language to learn for beginners.

Take it see how you like it.
