Chernobyl has always interested me because there's so much mystery surrounding it.

Pretty good video, I know a lot about it, because my home country is next to Ukraine. And at that time both our countries were one single country - Soviet Union. So basically I can say, that at that time it happened in my country.

Watched loads of documentaries about Chernobyl, I find the disaster very intriguing, thanks for the link ski11ed.

Those unfortunate to die from the radiation exposure reached around 4000-5000. I can only imagine how horrible, being sent there to clean up not knowing the full effects of being exposed to such a dangerous environment.

I have watched a few documentaries on this disaster and still have a few questions that I can hopefully get answered by some of you readers:

1. What exactly does a steam generator do and how do they leak?

2. I live in San Diego and as many of you know there is a nuclear power plant located a few miles away in San Onofre/San Clemente. There have been many problems with this particular power plant, and many have said its a disaster waiting to happen. What is the possibility that, if a disaster does happen, it reaches San Diego which is only about 20-30 miles away from the San Onofre Nuclear Power Plant?

 

A steam generator is the machine that boils water into steam. Nuclear reactors is basically a big kettle, with the heat from the nuclear reaction harnessed to boil water. The steam then turns a turbine, which generates electricity. If steam is not vented from the generator, it will build up and eventually cause an explosion due to the high pressure.

As for your second question, that is still relatively unknown, as it can greatly differ depending on the scale of the accident and factors such as weather. My guess would be that a large proportion of San Diego would be evacuated. Or at least, you would be made to stay indoors with windows and doors closed until further notice. If it was as bad as chernobyl, where a huge cloud was blasted into the air, it would be a terrible doom. Once radioactive particles get into the atmosphere, they can be carried around very quickly and spread by rain.
