Got a virus from Sythe?

So, yesterday night I played some Runescape on my Swifkit. I also had Google Chrome on with 3 tabs open: RS Wikia, Sythe and Youtube.

I was just playing RS, not touching my Google chrome and all of a sudden a message saying my PC was infected popped up on the tab on which I had Sythe open. I did NOT click any links, I was just playing RS.

It appeared as a fake ''My Compter'' folder with a fake virus scanning thing on the same page which included ''remove infections''. With my mind being so warped up on RS and the time being 1am, I stupidly clicked ''remove infections'' because it scared the shit out of me and I thought it was the real ''My Computer'' folder. So, it basically downloaded some WinRAr infections onto my PC, which I then removed. I'm still scared to log onto RS though....

How could this have happened if I didn't click any links? I'm 99% certain it was from Sythe as it came up on the same tab Sythe was on while RS Wikia and Youtube remained unchanged.

RS wikia has been known to accidentally run infected Ads. Not their fault. It was 100% not sythe. Google it for Rswiki, they even apologized.

Download and install Malwarbytes Anti-Malware (MBAM) Run a scan, if it's clean, you are 99% certainly clean, especially from this sort of attack.

 

Well, I installed Malwarebytes and it found a few things, then I ran another scan and it found nothing, so I ran an Avast full system scan and it found 7 malware and 1 spyware.

I think it was one of the Sythe ads since the virus appeared on the tab on which I had Sythe open. I've heard about RS wiki having these type of things, but I doubt such ads would go on to replace a completely different tab and site. It must have been Sythe.org, unfortunately....

 

I doubt it was Sythe. Sythe doesn't have random ads through Google or AdSense or anything like that. While I don't know what it is, I highly doubt it was Sythe. I've been here for almost 4 years and have never experienced anything like that.

 

There's not viruses on the sythe ads, I can assure you.

I'm sure it was fake anyways. More than half of the anti virus programs that come with your computer are complete shit. Just switch to AVG.

 

As the poster above said, get AVG and use that for protection.
1) It's free.
2) It's actually most other AV services, including McAfee and Norton 360, which both cost a fair share of money.
3) It's awesome
