I can't stand it anymore. I can't stand pretending that I believe in god. My mom is an Orthodox Christian and all she talks about is god. That's all I hear from her. When I am having difficulties in life she tells me to pray to god. I'm tired and sick of hearing this. In my opinion, praying is a waste of time, you are just talking to yourself thinking there is something out there that can hear you. I am tired of pretending. I go to church every Sunday pretending to believe in god. In my religion there is this thing called confession. You have to go alone with the priest at this stand with a bible, and tell the priest all of your sins that you have made. I am fucking tired of telling some stranger everything bad I have done. My mom makes me do this. I'm only 14 and I have no choice. I have to do as my parents tell me. I am fucking tired of telling some guy all the sins or whatever that I have made. If I tell my mom the truth, she'll be really heartbroken. I don't know what to do. Should I just deal with life until I grow up, and then believe what I want to believe?

You should have posted this in the Personal Support Forum.

Personally I think you should confront your mother and say that you do not believe in your religion, which encompasses going to church. You should then tell her that you need a bit of time to think about life and religion and you just need a temporary break from it.

If she agrees, then your off the hook.

If she insists that you go and forces you then your in a really tough spot.
You could either disrespect your Mum and not go to church, and cause a scene if she forces you in.
You could show her controversial quotes from the bible and try to say you prefer a different faith, or don't believe in God.

The other thing you could do is just follow her lead until you get older.

Personally I think being assertive is the way to go. Tell your mum that you do not believe in the religion she follows and that you'd like to make your own mind up.

^ I agree. Telling your mom your athiest (or whatever you are choosing) is really hard. I still havent done it yet. I dont ever plan on telling her. I just go with it, and yeah, it gets annoying but..wouldnt you rather have you being annoyed and angry than your mother sad and heartbroken?

I don't see what the big deal is. Just lie to the priest if that's what you have a problem with.. If you don't believe in God, then why does it matter if you lie to the priest? I understand what you're talking about with your mom and stuff, but just put on a face and tough it out for her sake. My family is from Louisiana and any one of them would turn over in their graves if they thought I didn't believe in God. pot helps too

Telling your mom the truth is not a good idea.

It will greatly upset her and she will go wayyyy overboard to make sure that you become a Christian.

Just let her believe what she wants. Honestly, it might suck for you but it's best to not upset her now.

I find these threads rather strange as I'm from england and religion over here is a whole lot different, I don't go to church and i dont' know anyone that does. It's strange for me to think how it is in america.

Alright, that's what I was thinking of too. I'll just deal with it for four years. Maybe I might even somehow start believing in god. I heard that if you live with people who believe in a certain thing, you will end up believing it too. But who knows what the future will bring.

Dealing with it isn't the right thing to do.. you need to be who you are. yes it'll make your mom heartbroken but she'll understand and still love you just the way you are.. my whole family is christian im an atheist and i told my mom that i don't believe in god and she understood and accepts me for the way i am... if you are true to yourself and are truly not a christian respect your own life decisions and tell your mom. because in the end parents will always accept you for who you are..

Stand up for who you are, if you don't believe in god, then don't let yourself be forced into pretending you do. If she complains, give her a few of Richard Dawkins' books.
