Getting a file hosting site going... some questions

Well, I was told this might get some more attention here.


First off I want to say don't come here to flame or spam.


Alright. So I woke up this morning and I had the idea to start a file hosting site.

I know that I need a host and a domain already.

But, I have many questions.

1) Is there a certain type of hosting I need to purchase for it to be a 'file hosting' site.

2) How much do you think it would cost to get a domain and host the site (also how much space or gb's should the site have)

3) If there is a certain way I have to have the site set up to be a file hosting site what am I limited to having on it? Can I put some sort of forums or games section to the site along with the file hosting part?

4) Can I allow for music hosting? Or is this against the law? (I've never seen a file hosting site with music hosting)

And if there's anything I missed let me know.

I also have many ideas for it that would make it stand out amongst other file hosting sites, as long as I'm capable of having them done.

1) No, you don't need a certain type of hosting, as long as you don't go against the Terms of Service of the host.

2) Domain = $7 (.com with promo/from godaddy)
Good hosting = $10~ a month (I prefer Hostmonster, actually.)

3) There are no limits to what you can do. You can find tons of premade file host scripts, or even write your own.

4) So as long as you don't go announcing you have illegal music files, you won't get in trouble. If you DO get caught for the music files, the first warning will only consist of a letter asking for the removal of the files.

Note: You should actually be sure if you want to make this investment. Are you sure you'll get the hits you need to keep the site going? Will you make enough profit to fund for the site? Will you go overboard with the hits and be forced to buy more bandwidth? Questions such as these should be answered before hand, and will truly help you in deciding on whether or not you want to go on with this plan.

To make it stand out, there is not much you can do. You can offer user accounts, custom hosting plans, etc. People are paid to be unique and come up with these ideas to help their host become the best.
