Free wifi access on the road

Stumbled upon this blog POST on a suggestion how to get a free wifi connection with the help of these apps like WiFi you, WiFI map.

Seems like it could be useful while traveling for work or vacation. Anybody used them?

 

I don't think it's secure

 

gave it a read and i still dont understand it, but like the other guy said, i doubt its actually secured, so no point unless you really desperate, im surprised you don't have a phone data plan or something similar

 

I'd never use open WiFi on a machine that I used for work or conduct any business that I actually care about (or holds/is transmitting any kind of information that I care about). It's effortless to put up something like a proxy server to monitor all information traveling through your network.

That being said, apps like this can be useful if you're just messing around...or doing something like War Driving.

Another useful tool used in conjunction with these apps, if you're driving and have room to spare in the car, would be a satellite dish that has a WiFi range booster USB dongle mounted at the focal point of the dish (you'd connect it to your netbook/laptop via USB extension cord).

This'll give you an absolutely massive range for picking up (or keeping) WiFi connections - but it does look really fucking weird cruising around with a satellite dish in your back seat (I often wonder how I didn't get pulled over regularly while War Driving).

 

I believe these apps are useful when traveling abroad and you don't want to pay a high amount of money for data. Of course, there's an option to get the local provider and use that data on the card.

Nevertheless, I will probably give it a try next time I'm out of the country. Going to stay safe, not do any financial stuff or logging in while on the wifi provided.
