Ok, well Im doing geometry - Proofs? Double congruency, stuff like that. Im having MAJOR issues and was wondering if anyone knows a good website or a good book that could help me out?

 

Ooh, I loved proofs last year for Geometry. Most people in my class hated it, lol. The textbook we used was: "Geometry for Enjoyment and Challenge", by Richard Rhoad, George Milauskas and Robert Whipple and published by McDougal Littell.

I don't actually seem to be able to do the question I can't find any simple ways of doing it.

yx - y = [2x(x^2+3x-4)+4x-4] = 2x^3 + 6x^2 - 4x - 4

y + dy/dx(x) - dy/dx = 6x^2 + 12x - 4

Lets see...
Assuming gradient is the slope of the line, you'll need to take the derivative of the above function. In its current state, the derivative would take a lot of work to complete, so first, youll need to simplify the function.


As others have already stated, the function can be simplified to:

y = [2x^3+6x^2-4x-4]/(x-1)



You can take the derivative from here, but that still requires a lot of work. The function can be simplifed further by factoring (x-1) out of the numerator. Typing the algebraic long division would be quite tricky, but the actual simplyfied version will look something like:

y=2x^2+8x+4

(If I get a chance, Ill try to post a picture of this step, as I really havent explained it much >.<)



From here, taking the derivative is a lot easier:

dy/dx = d/dx (2x^2+8x+4)

dy/dx = 4x + 8



Then it is simply a matter of inputing 2 as your x variable:

dy/dx (2) = 4(2) +8

dy/dx (2) = 16

Thats the solution I've come to. Not sure if its right (agian, not even sure if gradient refers to slope). But anyways, hope it helps!

Though I don't really understand the derivative part, or the long division part [are you sure it's accurate?], if this is correct, then thank you so much for helping out on this thread If not, well, I applaud your effort

 

The derivative part is correct. I've just double checked on a calculator, and indeed, the slope of line y at 2 is 16, so the math is correct. The long division was done correctly as well, seeing as the answer was right... Just really hard to show via typing.

Hey, glad to help. Im sorry that i couldnt explain more, Ill have to start using diagrams. Im sure you can understand that typing math isnt easy. Anyways, if any more calculus problems arise, Ill be lurking.

Oh, polynomial division. I wasn't thinking along those lines, but that would work if done correctly. Am I right in thinking there is no remainder either, since substituting +1 into the numerator gives an answer of 0?
