This summer, I have a job with nice pay, and I plan on building my own computer. I plan on using it for high FPS gaming and other basic uses (MW etc.)

Anyone have a recommendation on a good book or source I could use to build knowledge before diving into building my own computer? I ordered the "For Dummies - building a computer" which should be here in the mail in a couple of days. Let me know guys. Thanks.

I built my own computer for the first time in 8th grade without instructions, It's pretty straight forward you just have to be very cautious the first time. I hope this doesn't count as advertising, but the best place to buy computer parts hands down is newegg.com. If you're unsure what nparts to buy, just google them, and once oyu build it you'll be so proud lol

Secondly I think you should get Sli nvidia geforce 9800gtx2 and connect them

Quad core processors are getting lower in price so i suggest getting one.

max your ram out rams like 20-1gb id get 64 bit vista with 8gb ram

Get a good souundcard should be cheap.

Make sure you get a Good mother board, fann, and a cooling system.

just a few words, DO NOT force parts into places, and dont work around carpeted area or animals, a single static charge can fuck up your hard drive. its quite easy to assemble together you got to be careful tho, and make sure you know your motherboard model if your gonna buy ram seperatly, if it wont match up it wont work. i recommend you get some parts that will be updated for a few years, its a hassle spending lots of cash on some parts that will become outdated. and yes use newegg. and yes, get GOOD fans, my pc sometimes overheats coz my fan acts like shit so i cant leave it on for more than 2 days rofl. and if you really planning to make a hugeass rig, get it watercooled (im probably over exaggerating here tho) lulz, have fun

 

Don't worry, it'll be easy. Just follow that book, and you should be fine. It really isn't that hard. As others have said, New Egg will get you the most bang for your buck.

 

Make sure you order parts that are compatible with eachother. My cousin spent a fuck ton on components and they didn't even fit in the slots in his motherboard. QQ

It's really not hard. Just make sure that if your motherboard only takes socket LGA1366 (Core i7), then don't buy LGA775 (Other 'core' series, like the E8500 and QX9550.) Also, don't buy DDR3 RAM for a DDR2 mobo. Bad things happen.

 

Make sure you build it with AMD Processor

Depending on your price range I would still use newegg not to mention there recommendation's are usually (not always) spot on with item recommendations, ram for specific motherboards, video cards,etc..

Depending on what you plan on getting Intel/AMD as of right now with the release of the i7's I would go with one of those hands down even with the cost. DO NOT get a quad processor unless you have to (i7), it's generally useless for most app's and the clocks are already low enough since it's split 4 ways best off just getting a nice decent OC'able Dual-Core such as the E-8400 which is the best bang for the buck CPU Intel has by far. The 8400 is only split 2 ways therefore for the normal everyday apps that you DO use you're going to have a higher clock to work from. Ram is cheap nowadays I would recommend at least 4 gigs especially using Vista(even though XP's limit is 3.5 or so). Video card depending on what you're playing the best bang for the buck is the 4870's I believe nowadays awhile back I would of recommended the 9800's but the drop in prices with the 4870 would make me choose that. Everything else is straight forward you don't need a monstrous power supply but I do recommend a nice one because usually the one's that come in case's that you buy are generally OEM or just terrible. Anything in the vacinity of 650 watt I would recommend, also getting a modular power supply helps tremendously for cable management. A decent case I would recommend is the Antec 900 I believe, i've personally built a few computers inside of them and easily one of the best airflow cases i've worked with. Everything else should be straight forward with you, DVD/RW/Hard-drives etc..

Thanks bro, I am looking at a 700 watt power supply at the moment, I am looking to play wow, and running several apps at once with it. and getting good FPS, as well when they release new games with better graphics. So not top of the line, but well running. I will post what I am looking at soon for more advice.

 

Video card
At least a NVidia 9600 GTX.

Sound card
Depends on your motherboard, some motherboards have great onboard sound. But really there hasn't been many advances with sound cards so the cheap and nasty ones are good, as long as they support the surround sound you want.

Processor
Defiently Quad core or a really good Dual Core. Just make sure they are compatable with your mother board.

Hard drive
These days you will need at least a 500gb one.

Fans
Depends on your computer case's design. A couple of 8cm ones and one 12cm one is usually sufficient.

Memory
If you are running 32bit. Get 3gb 800Mhz if you have 64bit go with 6gb 800Mhz.

Operating System.
I'd go with Vista 32bit, home premium.

 

If all you do is plan on running wow depending on your monitor size and if it supports 1920 or not a 4870 should most definitely be able to run at max up to the 1920 resolution with HIGH FPS and no hiccups. But then again unless you're rocking a 24+ inch monitor you won't really see that kind of resolution i'm assuming you're running something in the 19/20 vacinty?

Also I see you added an x58 board so that means you're going with the i7's obviously good luck with them im running the 920's right now and they're spectacular, you can OC them out of the box with retail fan's if you wanted to, my suggestion is to get a different motherboard but if you're set on getting an ECS for whatever reason go nuts, unless it's a cost issue?

Depending on your budget left over or just let me know your overall budget and I can give you the heads up on some things.

 

Im trying not to break the 800$ range. for now. I was thinking I should just do the dual core, instead of I7's, and I want to run wow, and other programs, at the same time, running a 20'' screen or so.

 

If your price range is 800 then just go with the e8400 it's the best bang for the buck CPU by far and yea i7's get expensive due to the motherboard/different ram costs. Not to mention getting the 8400 will allow you to have more assurance in your other areas like graphic cards/more ram/ so you can balance what you missed out .

For $900 you could get something much better.
