The viral thread bullshit benefits no one but him. We don't see any additional posts, we don't see any improved quality within the forum; that shit is just lining his pockets.

Viral threads do benefit everyone. Google is complicated but their basic approach is this: The more hits a website has the more important it is therefore the more traffic should be sent to it.

Ergo they use a recursive definition for their website rankings. If a site is popular, send it traffic, if it is unpopular, don't send it traffic.

Viral threads break their model and help boost our rankings. The site's ads are not pay per click or pay per view, they are flat rate. We don't make any money off viral threads. In fact the servers go under strain and need to be looked after during viral threads.

And I am just procrastinating in the spam forum. I'm supposed to be writing code for my day job but I'll have a look at the suggestion forum in a bit.

To be honest, this forum doesn't need all the tweaks it's getting. If you look most of the suggestions that get implemented end up falling flat within months, if even that. This is a 8+ year site right? And it has sub-forums with as little as 30 posts in it and almost the same amount of views? It's useless to create a section for that amount of people compared to the amount of people that use this forum. What you need to do is stop listening to the suggestions so much and just implement what you think is going to work. Ever try to fix something only to make it worse? Well you're taking suggestions from many people with minimal support compared to the userbase and approving them, which makes it 100x worse. You just need to do what you think will be best for the site. I think you need to re-do the entire direction this forum is heading, you need to erase all the things that are getting practically 0 activity in them, combine topics with minimal activity in them, and get together with your team of admins to figure out what the next step is. This site can be turned into a gold mine just like Powerbot is, but you have to take the initiative, and quit approving these bullshit suggestions.

I know I'm not Richard, but please specify. I have no idea which suggestions you are referring to.....

    Again, please provide an example.

You're still not giving any context/providing any examples...

That's what we've been working on and trying to improve for like the past 6 months. That's why the Scar/Simba sub forum, which had little activity, is now gone.

    edit: http://www.sythe.org/feedback/1595815-mods-all-over-place.html

Seems like you're just unhappy with the site in general and always have something to complain about...

I'm not going to type another explanation out because I got an error message when I clicked submit.

    How about using your eyes?

    Example:
    http://www.sythe.org/livestreams-media/
    http://www.sythe.org/graphics-tutorials-resources/
    http://www.sythe.org/guides/

These sections barely have as much replies and views as there is people online RIGHT NOW.

    Example:
    http://www.sythe.org/denied-suggestions/1595322-path-exile.html
    Poke MMO Section

These are examples of sections that fell absolutely flat and goes to show that 50 or 60 people supporting a suggestion, whether it be a sub forum or not, DOESN'T represent the community.

So lets say you take 10 suggestions that have 200 supports each (which is impossible), and approve them. That means that there's X amount of people that either don't support it, or don't have an opinion on it. For each of those suggestions, 200 people are being satisfied, and the rest either don't have an opinion or are dissatisfied. So you implement the suggestion, and eventually those 200 people (Again, impossible to get) and the few random people who stumbled upon it, will either lose interest, leave Sythe, or put there focus into something else. So now you're left with a suggestion that from the start, didn't even have 1/4 as many supports as people that are on RIGHT NOW. That section loses more and more activity, until finally it gets deleted or abandoned. And then, the cycle starts completely over. For suggestions that aren't sections, the same exact thing applies except they aren't deleted.

So the approach you've taken hasn't worked, so you need to try something else. There's 700 people ONLINE right now, 700! Sythe is basically sitting on a gold mine. You need to stop listening to people that haven't showed there competent, or old enough to enough know what the outcome of a suggestion will actually be, just that they think it's a good idea and they want it. You need to get people who've proven they're competent enough to handle a forum, your moderators and admins, and say "Look, this worked, this didn't. What are things we need to do more of, and what are things we need to avoid" "What are ways we can capitalize on the large userbase, and what are ways we can increase profits". Sooner or later you will have a solid forum that won't need anything changed, except maybe a thing here or there, and you will practically be sitting back and watching the activity and profits come in.

Incidentally do you have any ideas on how to engage that large guest userbase? Because we've tried lots of different things.

    Advertising?

Get a campaign going via other game market forums and offer say a reward for them to join (not by referral).

You could offer them lets say a chance to win iTunes giftcard or some free gold of there choice. Or atleast get some gold selling vendors (on this forum) to offer 50% off there order or something.

Community involvement these days is highly admirable and the new sections/layout/threads you've made recently really tightened the community

I think that largely depends on why they are here and how they got here. If they are looking at market threads, you could put up a message encouraging them to join so that they could buy and sell stuff. If they are reading a viral thread, there isn't a lot you can do. If they are in the other games section you could have a message up about joining and participating in community gaming nights or something. Every section could get a different banner message at the top that gives a link to the registration page and has a bit about why they should join.

You could also throw in a few more ads for people and say that they get less ads if they register.

The community involvement strategies are garbage. People are actually thinking of making mules to go out an spam into Runescape? First of all, they'd be banned or muted, second of all I've never in my life went to one of those spamming links, and lastly the people who do that have loads of mules out because there life depends on it (Chinese Gold Farmers) in most cases.

I looked at the market yesterday pr a day before and was like "yes!" finally they've moved it around so everything is in better position. A few hours later I came back and it was all fucked up again. I really can't provide ideas or help build a base when for 1) half of the community is trying to get the other half banned and 2) when suggestions and tweaks are being based on 10-15 people (as your last poll suggests) when there is 800 users online right now.

The dispute forum, feedback section, and suggestions forums were moved somewhere toward the middle of the site somewhere or more to the bottom. Then a couple other things but I can't telly remember what they were, it could of just been that.

There are redirects at the top of the page that allows you to change the front page somewhat. You can choose for it to be market first or community first.

Oh, so you are referring to the button that links you to a page that 1/4 of it was already showing. Who's idea was that?

I was confused because you are using the new sythe layout, while I'm using the old layout. As far as I can tell it's a good step in the right direction (New Layout), nothing special, but now you're at least getting the idea of what the better focus is on.

I'm impressed with your patience. As the site owner, I'm sure you are sick of having to response the same thing to the same same discussions about something that happened 7 months ago. I respect you giving everyone fair treatment, especially in this care where you feel like they were not positive contributors to the site, is a very mature way to conduct business.
