Fast, Effective Guide To F2P Ranging

Welcome, this guide will go take you through the steps, methods, and locations to train your ranged fast and effectively in F2P, even if you're on a tight budget or have no money. This guide can also be followed for P2P players as well but different locations and better equipment can be used so some slight deviations from this guide would be for the best for P2P players. This guide begins assuming that you are level 1 ranged and have just come off of tutorial island but still have general knowledge of Runescape. If that is not the case, simply skim through the guide until you find a more appropriate section to start reading at. Enjoy. :)

    1) After Tutorial - The first few levels and some money

    - Start by heading North to the Lumbridge General Store, from location 1 to location 5 on the map. Drop all of your items EXCEPT your shortbow and your bronze arrows. Now you should be equipping a shortbow and your bronze arrows and have an empty inventory.

    - Head to the cow field (location 15 above). Begin attacking cows with ranged while picking up YOUR ARROWS, COWHIDES, and BONES. When you run out of arrows fill your inventory with Cowhides and Bones and head to Lumbridge Castle (location 7). Go up 2 floors to the bank and deposit all of your Cowhides and Bones as well as your shortbow.

    - Head to location 8 on the map with nothing. Claim the Ranged Tutor to receive a Training Bow and 25 Training Arrows. Now head back to Cows and train on them picking up the same items as last time. When you've run out of training arrows and your inventory is full of cowhides/bones, head North to Varrock.

    - Go to the Grand Exchange and withdraw all of your cowhides and bones as notes. Proceed to put them in the Grand Exchange at minimum prices. You should now have around 4500-6500gp.

    2) Getting more money and buying the essentials

    - Buy 20 cooked Trout and 8 cooked Lobsters from the Grand Exchange then bank your coins and head West to Barbarian Village with only the food.

    - Go through the Stronghold of Security, claiming the prize at the end of each level and eating food whenever necessary. (Click for Map)

    - Upon completion of the last level you should have acquired 10,000gp as well as either the fancy boots or the fighting boots which are the best boots possible for free-to-play players. Now climb up the bone chain to exit and walk back to the Grand Exchange.

    - You should now have around 14,500-16,500gp. Purchase the following from the Grand Exchange.
    • Oak, Willow, and Maple Shortbows (equip the Oak)
    • 1500 Bronze Arrows (equip)
    • Leather Cowil, Leather Vambraces, and Leather Chaps (equip these)
    • Iron Chain Mail and Amulet of Power (equip these)
    • Coif and Studded Chaps
    • Green d'Hide Vambraces and Chaps

    3) Ranged training time (40 and lower)
    - You should know look basically like this.

    - Go back to Cows in Lumbridge and keep training on them until you run out of arrows (Pick up arrows while training). Also, switch to Coif, Studded Chaps, and Willow Shortbow when you reach 20 Ranged.

    - Now spend the rest of your money on bronze arrows and continue mixing up training time between the cow field and the duel arena until you are 40 ranged. When you are at cows bank cowhides and bones every so often and whenever you reach 30 Ranged you can switch to your Maple Shortbow.

    3) Ranged training continued (40-50)
    - Equip your Green d'Hide Armour and you now have the best f2p ranged equipment)

    - Sell your bones/cowhides at the Grand Exchange and purchase some cooked trout (at least full inventory) and some bronze arrows (1-3k).

    - Train at Lesser Demons in the Karamja volcano, using safe spots, and pick up all your drops and arrows. Bank whenever you run out of arrows/food or have a full inventory of drops. Later you can sell gems/gold ores/runes at the Grand Exchange and random weapons/armour at the General Store.

Skip to about 3:30 of the video for Lesser Demon Safespots (NOTE: I did not make this)

    - It took me 2 loads to go from 40-50 Ranged. My first load I did 40-44 and the second one I got from 44-50 because I'd gotten better at using the safespots and used food slower.

    4) Ranged training continued (50+)

You should have made well over 30k from Lesser Demon drops. Buy 2k+ iron arrows and full trout and head to the final floor of the Stronghold of Security. It's time to train on Ankous in the room shown in the map below.

    - Train on the Ankous using the safespot, picking up your arrows and drops. Whenever you run out of food/arrows just bank in Varrock and sell your drops to the Grand Exchange. Repeatedly train here whenever you want higher ranged.

    5) Bonus Tips

    - You MAY want to keep the Addy Arrow drops from Ankous. These can be very useful in defeating other players at Bounty Hunter/Clan Wars/Duel Arena.

    - When you get 60+ Ranged it might be beneficial for you to use a better type of arrow for faster training. Try bringing 500 Steel or Mith arrows to Ankous and see if the drops you get are enough to at least cover the cost of the arrows if not maybe even profit as well.

    - Also, Cakes can be substituted for Trout anywhere in the guide as they are also inexpensive, they do heal more but take a few extra clicks.

    - If you get teleported by random event, monsters will become agressive again when you are returned back to the normal game. (I've died before thinking I can talk on MSN because they stopped being agressive but I'd just come back out of a random thus resetting them)

    6) My Account
This shows about how much I've PROFITED just getting 65 Ranged even though I've died twice and lost an estimated 120k worth of stuff.

Hope this might be helpful for some and happy ranging. :)

nice guide seems like a fast easy way to train range
i'd throw in some more training spots though because going to the same two spots could get boring

I do have one suggestion... Add more training spots. It's kinda boring only training at 3 spots...

I don't really want to add more training spots as the ones I've listed are the fastest, most effective ones and they even allow you to profit a fair bit during your training.

Also, if you get bored you can always mix it up between Lesser Demons and Ankous. Of course you can also go to Bounty Hunter/Clan Wars/Duel Arena if you'd like to show off your new Ranged power. :)

Use the edit button if you forget something, that's why it's there.

I've just finished 65-66 Ranged and it took around 1-1.5 hours an Ankous but I wasn't really training hard... also talking on MSN. I would say about 5-7 hours around for 65-70 Ranged.
