Should guns be legal or illegal and why

I see a lot of debate about this topic and want to know what the sythe community thinks. In my opinion guns should be completely illegal for the public, and only available to trained and screened persons for law enforcement/public safety. I understand some people look at it from a freedom perspective, or they feel they need it to protect themselves, but arming a whole country for fears of a crazed individual harming them makes no sense at all. The likelihood of a gun owner using his weapon to lawfully protect themselves is almost non existent. You cannot ignore the amount of deaths resulting from guns. The amount of gun violence going on in some parts of the world is alarming and saddening. Giving millions of people guns for protection isn't going to lower the crime rate it's only going to sky rocket it. Statistically speaking people do not need guns for self defense. It's just a paranoia built into society that makes people think they do. Some people see it as holding on to their rights, but they are doing so at the expense of so many fellow citizens. At the end of the day it's about the greater good, not about feelings. That's just my opinion, what do you guys think ?
