Extremely disappointed at OGV rank

I'm sure with the new rank will come more stricter guidelines in recruiting and maintaining the position.

 

What? Fun Rank saying 'OGV'? I don't even understand your point.

Cosrob (i think) is the head OGV, and I know he doesn't just let 'anyone' on the team. People can't just apply and get in.

 

It is fairly strict, but I'm kind of one to talk since I'm on the team already.

I'm for the rank, but wouldn't complain if it was taken away and I didn't mind not having one in the first place.

I don't do it for the rank, or the free guides. I'm simply offering a service to this site in helping others prove legitimacy of their guides to improve sales. Nothing more and nothing less.

 

Everyone can answer questions, give advice, and report stuff but there is no rank for it because everyone can do it, not everyone can access the OGV forums or verify anyone's guide officially. Also claiming abusing somebodies trust that you yourself will not exploit the guide and instead doing so being seen as an incentive is a terrible idea to make an OGV team if that is the only incentive.

This. This OGV has a point system where members are rewarded for certain things they do. If they get enough points, they get the rank, if they don't, they don't get the rank. The rank was made as an incentive, not to show trust whatsoever.

 

Yes, basically this. You don't even get the rank automatically. It took 2 months of activity to initially get the rank and from there you lose it if you stop contributing or get put on probation. It is quite strict.

Also, I think it would offer pretty nice publicity. I think Punjabi mentioned that.

 

Everyone can "volunteer" to do so, that's the difference. The OGV get a better incentive, the guides, and now the rank. I'm not against it nor supporting it, I just didn't feel it was necessary. Let's take FlyingToast for example, he's doing this to "help", not for the rank or anything of that sort. It's just another way he can help the community. Another way would be answering people's questions, giving them advice etc.

I can read through a guide for free, and verify it. What's the difference? They get to have a rank because they can access a forum? Anyone can verify a guide. I'm not sure what sort of argument you're trying to make.

And you think the people that's applied for OGV recently were only applying so they can actually "help" out and not for 1 bit think of the access they would get to free guides?

If I had an out of this world guide, I wouldn't get it verified by the OGV team. Instead I'd get a reputable member to read through it and test it out. If I'm correct, the OGV team as a whole votes, which means more than 1 person would get access to it. I would rather pick someone I know and give me a review, and verify it. Even if it's not official, I don't mind not having the "verified" in the title. At least then I'd know that only 1 person would have gotten it for free. No offense to the team, but that's how I'd do it.

People in the past have done it like this and has had successful guide threads.

 

You might be able to verify it, but you can't Officially Verify it. We had the freelance guide verifying go on for a few months and it failed epically and we had to bring OGV back.

 

I understand, but people would still think the same if a guide is "officially verified" or if it was verified by a trusted and well known member.

I was just telling Punjabi that anyone can do the same, even if only a few could unofficially verify it and make an impact such as the OGV.

 

The rank is cool and all, but I don't really care if I have it or not I'm on the team to help get good guides through and keep bad guides out of the section. I don't see why everyone is getting their panties in a bunch though, not 6 months ago there was a competition about making fun ranks and if you got picked then you got that rank - that showed no trust what so ever just a popularity vote and a little PS skill. I mean look at Ivy Bridge - he used his Tech Guru rank to scam, who decided to give him a tech guru rank what did he do? I can win a competition rank when a comp rolls through. That doesn't take any work, dedication, or trust. The stuff people whine about around here is just crazy sometimes.

It's a fun rank. People don't put "Cool Cat" in their Title to symbolize trust, do they? And the difference is one has the word "official" in it.

Don't mind me, I'm still on the fence and I'm just debating till someone can make an undeniably valid point.

 

It's still going to give the impression that these people did something great to receive this rank. Mods get a mod rank because they have mod responsibilities, OGVs ended up getting a rank because we have guide verifying responsibilities. We aren't going to say 'Oh man, this guide is awesome you should buy it!' because they're our friends. That is easy to do that when well-known person A says to well-known person B 'Look at my guide and post in the thread', because we all know that every highly active member in here has a circle of friends on Sythe. It's the team as you stated, we are an impartial group of fact-finders that verifies the legitimacy of a guide. I still don't care if I have the rank or not, but at least I am not going to get some noob accusing me of trying to steal his guide or something.

 

Only a handful of fun ranks were given out. I'd say they symbolize a bit of trust, they're rare and isn't something a normal member would want to lose. But if you put a fun rank and compare it to an "Official Guide Verifier" rank, the OGV one is more likely to be seen as a better symbol of trust. Sure, you get a rank, but how many of you did it to help out the community than to get the title? I am also curious as to how hard and how much effort is put into verifying guides.

That's a good point about some noob accusing you of trying to steal their guide lol. I guess I'd suggest a change in the wording of the rank, maybe just remove "official", as the rank itself would tell people you can officially verify a guide for them. It's more in between, that way it doesn't look like it symbolizes trust as much when it has "Official".

 

You seem to think these guides arnt already being abused/leaked, by any of the current OVG's, yet I can name one person(I'm not going to, it's not my place to say) Who is doing just that.
I have no problem with the rank in general, it's kind of tacky like the old UE rank, but meh.

 

Who gives a shit. The only reason ranks become a big deal are because of threads like these. They earned the position, so why aren't they allowed to show it?

Yeah I used it, but thats nothing compared to a rank - which is the point of this thread.

OGV isn't about a rank nor should it be an incentive to being an OGV, It was meant to be about purely helping the community. - people will now do it for the rank rather than helping out altruistically. The rank is automatically a trust symbol, its just that simple, because its official, its ANOTHER new rank which wasn't necessary.

It's the same thing has you saying you've handled $50,000 in trades - except I can actually verify easily that I am part of the OGVs. We have our names listed in the sticky with a link to our profile. It isn't like we are all people who have 150 posts and have been here a couple months. We are all dedicated community members who are taking responsibility to make sure people are getting accurate and working guides.

But it can easily happen. Just because you won't do it doesn't mean someone else won't. Look at Lillie's guide, it could easily be found for free on the internet else where but the first couple of pages were people praising it. (including well known community members, if I do remember correctly.) Turns out that the guide was completely awful and it didn't help that the OGVs ended up verifying it. That whole ordeal is why I worked so hard to get the guide section changed and to get on the OGVs, I don't want to see people getting ripped off.

But that is what we are. We are a staff sanctioned group of mainly non-staff members who have the ability to officially verify a guide on behalf of the staff. We are sort of like the MMs of guide sales.

I see what your points are, but I don't agree. It isn't like we are going to use it to scam - we are all well-known, highly active members of this community. Just about everyone knows who we are and have had some sort of dealings with us. It isn't like we are a group of no-names given a symbol of trust.

 

If you knew what was going on and had an issue with it I don't understand why you didn't post on the discussion thread.

Same thing. We clean up illegal guides or guides that don't work. I'd also like to think we try to promote guide sales.

I don't think anyone is in it for the rank honestly. As it stands though the team is its strongest in at least a couple months. I really don't see what there is to complain about.
