EDIT 2: This began as a discussion for how we could improve the current mods' efficiency in the now thriving market. In some ways it overlaps with a cry for more mods but that is not the purpose of this thread. We are simply trying to rally awareness of the current state of the Steam Account Sales section. Thank you.

Something strange is happening in the Steam Account Sales forum. In the recent weeks there have been quite a few low post members boasting accounts that are, to say, unreal. I'm trying to be optimistic here, but let's face it, this is ridiculous.

This user joined today.

You've got this guy: http://www.sythe.org/showthread.php?t=742420

Joined yesterday, boasting 10 four digits. For people who don't understand Steam lingo, a four digit might as well be a maxed out RS toon.

They are that rare.

He already has a user flaming him for scamming. People don't go to the trouble of flaming someone like that unnecessarily.

His only vouch is from another member who joined the same day as him, boasting just as many low digits.
You can find him here: http://sythe.org/showthread.php?t=742143
I called out this guy on his thread looking exactly like someone elses thread (see the second post), and he changes it but keeps it slightly similar.

This bit above is just from the last week.
The entire Steam Account Sales section has an enormous amount of ban evaders.

My suggestion: We simply need one of the Market Mods to educate himself a little bit about Steam trading and it's intricacies. A lot of the scamming and suspicious activity in the Steam Account Sales section could be mitigated through TWC's and a watchful eye. It's sad that proxies are abused this way, and people create three or more accounts at a time and scam newbies on rotation so they never get caught.

I know that this thread is really not that solid of a suggestion, but one gets tired of seeing this happen in his home on the forums and must say something once in awhile. =|

EDIT: Sorry I'm tired, someone move this to Suggestions please.

i agree... other game market is hardly moderated because some mods dont understand it. there should be a different type of mod for it :\ i remember going to steam section and it was a bunch of leechers saying the other is a scammer etc with no reports or anything, as if its a new website. something needs to be done, i personally think other game mods is the way to go

Yes thats true,Maybe they could use someone else or maybe even me as a mod,
We know the market,I really hate those leechers scamming people who are not known in the market (I know that cuz they did it to me when i was new)
I hope this thread will be looked at

I don't think game specific mods are necessary. It makes sense that a lot of the moderators are more Runescape oriented because this site grew off of Runescape cheating, so many of the senior members are more educated about Runescape.

You're right in saying that this site has grown in many ways, it's completely different than before and we need to see change that mirrors this.

The moderators who have been given the responsibility to oversee the market need to know what they are dealing with. Their job has just gotten harder.

Our current moderators are superb at dealing with reports about Runescape, and many of them can even prevent scams just by picking out fishy or threads that don't match up, but how many can browse the XBOX Sales or Steam Sales and pick up on scammers and suspicious threads?

It's not their fault that they didn't have this knowledge before they acquired their rank, but it is their responsibility to make sure that they learn what they need to know in order to do their job more effectively.

If it comes down to it, I would go as far as to suggest that there be Runescape Market Mods and Other Market Mods. That way we wouldn't have to demand the current mods to devote their time towards learning something completely foreign.

Agreed, something has to be done, every 2nd to 3rd thread i look at its always a leacher with these unreal deals like he has a 3/4 digit steam account tree in his back yard.

Exactly. There needs to be some way for people to learn to take caution.
If they can't learn to take the steps necessary to protect themselves, it may be necessary (and I know this is asking a lot) for the mods to step in and at least attempt to minimize the risks the users are exposing themselves to.

I totally support this. It destroys the steam economy on this website with their incredibly low prices for non existent accounts and we need someone who understands the steam community. Thanks Xel for pointing this out! :)

I might be new but I am going to have to agree on this one, I actually own my accounts and provide screenshots if someone asks but I see way too many new people with account with no valid proof that they own them whatsoever

Your suggesting new mods and thats not allowed.

Then consider that portion of my "suggestion" or feedback irrelevant.

Depending on how you decide to interpret it, this can also be thought of as feedback for how the current Market Mods should improve themselves.

LookAtMe, I totally understand that you are new, and I believe that everyone is innocent until proven guilty. However, I also do not believe in coincidences and I think that your best defense is your instinct. Suspicions should be investigated, even if one should not be hasty to jump to conclusions.

However, in order to investigate something specific, you need to have encompassing knowledge about it.

This is ridiculous, in my opinion these kids are just scammers who are taking advantage of the community as it is right now. By that I mean how the scammer forums are barely moderated and are just down right scamming people. We need mods like they had on *******, ones who would actually track down ban evaders and ones who moderated scammer threads frequently. Someone like xeL would be a good person for the job, as Season stated, not only are they scamming people but are rapidly dropping the prices of what steam accounts go for now-a-days.

All of them roughly use the same looking 4 digits, and all of them are probably ban evaders or users who think they can get away with scamming people.

EDIT: I guess they censored out my word, but the initials of the website are KH.

Of course, when we refer to "ridiculous" we are speaking of the scammers and not the mods. It's understood that the mods have lives and things to do. I find that it's not out of laziness that these shady threads and scammers are not looked into and taken care of, but rather lack of personal knowledge and experience with the kind of sales taking place.

Some can say that it's the moderators' responsibility to educate him or herself, but at one point you simply may have to consider a new system in order to moderate everything and not overload the staff.

EDIT: Just reading over my posts, I find that we're flirting with the grey area in-between user responsibility and moderator/staff responsibility. We should all be asking ourselves a few questions as we post responses:

How careful should users have to be on these forums?
Where does the moderators' responsibility to maintain a reasonable level of safety begin?
At what point should a moderator take initiative to actively search for suspicious activity?
Is it the user's responsibility to report suspicious activity or the moderator's to prevent it?
Does a user deserve a response if they correctly report suspicious activity?
To what extent does a user have have to explain suspicious activity to deem it necessary to investigate?

There are definitely more, but I would simply like anyone reading these posts to not jump on the bandwagon and start pointing fingers at either side.

He was suggesting the mods educate themselves a little more in the steam market, not necessarily that a new one was put into place.

who is stupid enough to believe that though? All you have to say is, I got xel to middle man, I'll pay the fees. If they say NO for any reason. They are scamming, if they agree most likely they aren't. But if their scamming, they'll try to talk you into no middle man,,, lower then 7 digit, get a middle man. They aren't that expensive and you won't regret it.

So you don't know if they are lieing, but just because of the possibility that they could never ever have those accounts because they are new? Take out the fact that they are a new member. If i would go and make a thread about selling 10 4 digits, would i be scamming also? I think this going more into stereotyping than anything, as you dont know that they are trying to scam. They could be legit.

Just because they turn down a MM doesn't mean they are scamming. I have never used a MM and have never scammed, nor been scammed.

I am never surprised when new members refuse MM's - it's easy to trust them when you've been in the community for a while, know who they are, and know how many trades they've done; but, without that knowledge, an MM seems little different than any other member. I've visited other blackmarkets, and have always refused their MM's (official or otherwise) until I've had time to assess the site.

So, refusing an MM indicates nothing. As for telling moderators they need to start playing steam so they can manage a forum, that's rather absurd. If it's that obvious that the user is scamming, buyers (who play the game and presumably know enough about it to be suspicious) shouldn't need the TWC to warn them.

Totally agreed. Also there are this kind of people in Runescape Blackmarket
Guy selling a lvl 60 says i dont go first and dont use mm. Joined today.

I agree with the MM part.

Although, I think the market staff should have more discretion. Thier moderating skills are limited by the sythe official rules, which is fucking stupid. The whole point of market mods are for them to be experienced in what they do and should be able to catch a scammer before they actually has any convicting evidence. I think TWC ranks are fucking stupid really, you might as well just ban them if they have had an intent to scam or any suspicious behavior. If you were really interested in buying/selling why the fuck would you mess about unless you're trying to scam?

I agree with you, and i know how rare 4 digit steam accounts are. There should be a rule that you have to include screenshots of the account in a game, to verify that it is actually a 4 digit account.
