How do I make my own server that clients can connect to, I have dynamic so I can't just type a static IP in there, as mine will change within seconds of releasing it..

I really need to know, no-IP didn't work with me..

I want my IP hidden though, I could always make it open a txt file in Inet and it would read my IP off the web etc, but I'd have to keep updating it etc and it may get a bit annoying..

Perhaps you shouldn't attempt to help then, lol. Nah, joking. I just setup a new DNS server:

vintserver.no-ip.org

Okay, can anyone tell me if it is online/or not? The server is running atm, I have the no-ip program running etc, it says it's all ok. Is it?

I've come up with a way to do this for two reasons:

1) I run uTorrent at my Grandparents' house on their computer with FAST cable internet which has a dynamic IP. I needed the IP because uTorrent has a WebInterface allowing me to start torrents remotely.

2) The game I will be programming will require a computer for a server for stats and such and static IP's normally cost extra. This to will most likely run at my Grandparents' house too.

Basically, what you will need is a host and a domain name. It needs to have (if this will be a big server) high bandwidth, but small storage. You have 2 PHP files, which I can write for you. One file will write your IP to either a MySQL database, or much easier, a text file. The other PHP file will display the text file/MySQL database information. If you only need one user, then it will only require one PHP file and one text file.

On your computer, you have a program which connects to http://whatismyip.com and splits/strips your IP address from the source. The program running on your computer would do this at an interval that you would set. It would then connect to your host/domain and connect to the PHP file that writes the text file or the MySQL database.

For the client program to connect to your IP (I assume this is for a chat system or something of the sort) you have it connect to the PHP file which displays your IP, which you could encrypt (I can help you with that too.) Reads that, decrypts it if nessicery(yes I know it is spelled wrong), and then is able to connect to it.

The actual server program and client program is up to you to write, but in my spare time this summer, I will write a nice tutorial with source code for all of this. Heck, I'll even host the PHP files for you since my server is already set up for a multi-user for updating IPs.

Let me know how this works and if you need help.

Aha, ok. Thanks a lot, I'll put everything you said into practice after I've written a new guide for an application. :)

No Problem. :)

In fact, I'm whipping up an example program for your computer to run.
And I will whip up a PHP file for you.

I'll attach it as soon as I'm done.

Attached, find a sample IP updater program and the PHP file to write it. Open settings.ini to change you settings.

Well, I made a server and a client. I ran the no-ip program and it said it was fully updated etc. I then ran the server on port 8245 (no-ip's default).

I opened the client and connected to my server on the port 8245. No connection.

I guess it's like 'you can't connect to your own external IP' or something.

halojunkie, you can just use "echo $_SERVER['REMOTE_ADDR'];" to print your IP address instead of parsing the whatismyip.com page :P

Anyhow it does seem like a port forwarding problem.

not in visual basic you cant. but i could make another PHP file.

and i just started php lol

yea port forwarding is important

No-IP should work, just log into your router by typing 192.168.1.1 in your browser and configure the ports.

UWotM8?

It is, no-ip didn't work for me until i port forwarded, he probably is on a router too, or his isp blocks that port by default.
