Just to let you know that Vista will always be buggy, the service packs are just security patches and will not fix vista at all. It uses so much ram because it is running Directx for most of it crap so you will need at least 1 gig of ram and I see you only have .99 gig of ram. Down grade to xp if you do not want a buggy computer or get linux or Mac OS X.

well being an IT tech I'm yet to find a laptop that has the ability to render a lot of VISTA screen transitions, thats why it appears slower than your mums even though she may has less RAM. Moblie Intel chipsets are no match for a true stand alone graphics card, that being said, if u wanted to keep XP check your graphics performance settings...

Control Panel > Performance and Maintaince > Performance Options

Try disabling a few of the marked "visual effects" boxes and check your page file size under Advanced > Virtual Memory.... make sure that isnt set below the recommened size otherwise increase it a little :)

    hope that helps

If you have vista plainly for the looks, just get XP with crack version of windows blinds. I have that and my computer looks just as good as a vista =), cept the transparancies are a little messed up for me.

Yeah you need xp. Your ram is fine, but your processor is a bit weak.

imo ditch vista and go back to XP.
better performance, better security, and whilst you lose all those essential colours and bells and whistles at least you can change your mouse without it screaming at you.

or you could try linux, but only if your confident in your computer skills.
