I've been playing Runescape for a LONG time now, and have noticed a lot of things about the game.

But one thing that I pondered over for a long time after the wild and free trade was taken away is if Real World Trading actually helped runescape. I think of it like this.

When people buy gold, they play more and help out Runescape's economy by spending it.

When people have more gold in Runescape they actually have MORE things to do in the game, making them spend money on memberships and making them spend more time in game.

When people bot they have the skills to actually do the more enjoyable things in Runescape like Pking, minigames, God Wars, KBD's, Quests etc. etc.

Jagex see's Botting and RWT of items and gold, as cheating when it's really like having a Cash Shop for their game.

Anyone else think differently?

I do understand that leveling by hand actually gives Jagex more money, but in the long wrong if you bot the stat up quickly, it will be more beneficial to you and allow you to do more stuff making you play longer I guess. The same with gold.

I agree with this to an extent. But it doesn't help the game in the way that normal players don't have access to these types of facilities and would find it very hard to trust in them. The fact that we have a way around all the tiresome grinding is an advantage over the regular players, so it doesn't help the game.
It doesn't help Jagex at all because it would promote botting/scripting which is illegal in all online games and so is real world trading.

The one thing I like about runescape is they don't have a cash shop.

Games with cash shops create a massive unbalance.
I played a game with a cash shop where I spent NOTHING and It was insanely unbalanced.

That being said, botting and RWT probably helps slightly more than hurts.
Bots bot resources. Therefore a surplus in resources will result in lower prices until they reach equilibrium.
So in essence more resources are available at cheap prices.

On the flip side, legit players are unable to make much money as the resources are cheap, so in comparison all you've really done is just pumped the economy with masses of resources.

However with the current botting state of RS, and how irreversible it is. If all bots were abolished then prices of resources would rise 2,4,8 even 20fold.

Let's pretend there are 10,000 Sorc Garden botters, botting 24/7. Lets say the bring in 1 million herbs a day in total.
BOOM no more bots, therefore legit players must take over. Legit players with no life play 8 hours a day. You would need 30,000 legit players playing 8 hours a day every day in order to replicate the current botting "crisis"

This won't happen, decrease in supply results in massive spikes in demand; prices soar.

The rs economy is essentially dependent on botting.

bots help the economic its just stupid people who dont think report get the bots banned

if they think for once they probs wont get anything as cheap as supplies without bots e.g prayer might even cost like 500m+ and con 1b+

Wrong. A decrease in supply would lessen the demand. It is hard to get your head round but a drop in supply would lead to a rise in price, not demand.

Hence the drop in demand as prices rise.

I thought the same when I first started studying economics, haha

Full agree with this statement. Also cash shops do create a huge imbalance, but I'm not saying that Runescape should have a cash shop. I'm simply implying that when you buy ingame gold and items, it mainly is...Or you could see it as this

[Choose a path for item Dragon Claws]

Grind the required combat stats, and then the required monsters

OR

Buy it for $25..

Any game with a legit cash shop eventually will fail/fails.

Botting/RWTing is the best substitute for cash shops, that are actually made by the game developers.

I support Botting/RWTing :)!

Bots even each other out. Every problem that one bot creates, another gets rid of. Runescape without botters would just be 75% less people online and 99% less gold in the economy.

Bot and RWT does not help runescape at all.

If there was no bot, then everything will be stable. Yes price will go up. But all that means is people will be able to make more money from actually legitley making money in game.

Right now we botted so much crap into the game that it caused everything to drop. And even the botted items. Back then, when i botted for whips at abby demon, i would make 3m every whip. But because of all the bots, there is to many whips in the game. Now it is 1m every whip.

Let me break it down.

Bots makes price goes down for everything. Not a GOOD THING.

If a legit player Farms Abyssal demon for 1 hour and got 1 whip. He would make 3M if there was no bot to cause a mass supply of whips.

But, because of bots. If the same guy farms abyssal demon for 1 hour again and got 1 whip. He will only sell for 1M.

See how that works? Now because of all the bot, that legit player would have to farm 2 hours MORE to gain what he used to make before all the bots ruined whips. This ruins the economy, making it very unstable. Legit players will have to put more time and effort to make money.

What this does is all items that can be botted will essentially go DOWN in price. While Discontinue items such as santa and mask, will eventually go UP in price in the long run, (Not talking about daily price. Talking about in a year or so). This cause people to believe they are poorer because they can't afford to buy discontinue item which for the majority of runescape player is there main goal.

Thousands of bots get membership which gives Jages money. Botting + RWT gives jagex more $$.

"bots are beneficial to the economy" that is a load of bullshit.

Situation: Yes, bots create many resources, and by doing this they devalue skills and the resources themselves. Pushing items down to very cheap prices.

The Lie: If bots were gone, items would ruin the economy.

The truth: If resources rose, skills would be worth training and it would raise the value of $$ per hour, thus raising the amount of gold in runescape circulating. This would make more players skill to make up for the lost resources, and it would also make the economy more balanced. The resources wouldn't rise even near 20 fold, some resources would MAYBE double or triple in price from panic, but they would fall after that and end up between 1.5-2x the original price which would be good for everyone especailly since free trade has killed the price of skilling supplies.

Don't just make up statistics. You have absolutely no idea.

However , you are right about a lot of members are botters. But not 75%.
I think without bots , and RWT RS would be horrible. If you look at nearly evey single MMORPG there is RWT.

I agree with this, but you're missing the whole point of runescape. the point of runescape is to have no life. If there's a surplus of resources and prices go down it makes being good at a particular skill or having lots of those resources unrewarding. It's like when the school lets people get letter jackets in things such as band, speech team, weights, or ultimate frisbee for participation. I now have no incentive to get a letter jacket, even though I have a varsity letter in football, track, and cross country because since nerdy nafs have them they aren't cool anymore, and not worth the investment. I believe it is much the same in runescape. If everyone has 99 cooking, who the fuck cares if your account has 96 cooking(which used to be a REALLY boring thing to achieve) because you can just bot to 99 in two days. So botting helps people who have a life outside of runescape, people who want to be good but not spend their precious time doing tedious busywork. For actual nerds, whose entire life revolves around runescape botting is the devil.

True, but not everyone who doesn't bot has no life. Some people just may not want to get their stuff that they've worked hard for taken away.

When free trade was taken away, catching botters was taken to an extreme. It was kind of like Russian roulette...Either you get that precious 99 skill, or you lose your account.

Here's what I think -

From our point of view, botting is good in the sense that it means there will be a constant supply of Item "x" and GP, meaning the price of GP will be pretty stable.
From other players points of views (that don't bot) botters are a nuisance who steal their spots, cause prices to fluctuate etc.
From Jagex's point of view, I guess bots are good in a way, it gives them more sales in memberships etc but it also means that a LOT of the money they are earning aren't actually from legitimate players.
