Damien, the numbers 0-9 havnt always existed.

Did you kno it took some cultures over 10000 years to come up with a symbol that would represent '0' or negative numbers, yet they lived just fine, they didnt die because their precious system of numbers really wasnt true or complete.

Would we all die if we didnt hav math for a day?

The names of the numbers were simply invented, but the concepts were ALWAYS there.

It doesn't matter if some civilizations couldn't come up with a symbol for '0' or not. It was still there. If a little boy was in 2000 B.C. and got in trouble for touching his sister, his father could say 'you get nothing for dinner'. He hands the son nothing and hands two pieces of meat to the daughter. Same thing as 0 pieces of food and 2 pieces of food, the concept was always there whether they called it 0 and 2 or not. We just invented a system to keep track of the world. Math isn't even necessary the language of science. Just a system used to represent quantities.

do we invent math or find math?

I think most of you are going back and forth between whether "math" always existed or whether "numbers" always existed. Both of these are simply tools to help us understand our environment. It is a way of perceiving things. So, you can't really claim anyone just "found" math.

Sure, someone was the first to question a method to keep track of things by using different terminology, and technically, we "invented" math and numbers. Just like we assign numbers to science to better understand things, math is the same concept. So, I suppose that we created the vocabulary and usage of math, but I don' think anyone can really claim anyone invented math.

do we invent math or find math?

we invent math. what we invented, coencides with out theorys and what we belive in. We define what we want maths to be therfore, we can basicly never be wrong when making a rule. as long as it follows the firs guidlines as to what was specified when math was created.
We make it what we want it to be.

Another note, we invented the numbers that math uses, we invented the rules, we invented the names of the shapes. there is no such thing as a perfect cirlce or square, and we cannot correct that. a perfectly straight line DOES NOT EXIST.
We only assert these rules. Pie, is, and never will be a full number it is never ending. we can never be EXACT.
The number we invented, are made to fit with the equations, they are not naturally formed and used. they were not here with the creation of earth.
unless you are a hardcore catholic that belives the earrth is 3000 years old or whatever, and you think "GOD" created the letters and numbers, you will agree that maths is not naturally formed.

Obviously humans invented math. Who's to say that 1+2 isn't 4? We said that when we defined "3" as the third number in the positive numerical scale. We created words and language. We created math as a universal language to represent quantity; this was probably done for use in bartering. That's like asking did we discover language. It was created out of necessity. Someone had to invent it, and as humans needed a way to communicate, we developed an intelligent form of communication. Numbers were created in the exact same way.
