Ok, so someone told this to me recently: "The only thing is, that if there is no afterlife athiest win and believers lose nothing, but if there IS an afterlife, athiest lose, and believers win."

I just wanted to know what people thought of this.

The thing about that situation, is that there is no way for the atheists to realize they were right, or for theists to realize they were wrong. Sort of like a paradox.

Rather incorrect. If there is no afterlife, believers lose all the time they spent praying, attending church, worrying about hell/hoping for heaven, and any other time/money spent towards religious endeavours.

At least atheism has certainty. Religious people have to spend their last moments worrying about whether their beliefs are accurate.

However this is flawed; how do you know your God is the right one?

 

If there is no afterlife, believers have used resources on a futile attempt at getting a good afterlife. If there is an afterlife, who wins depends on which afterlife is the right one. Everyone could win, everyone could lose, or anything in-between.

I admit I'm afraid of death, no shame in that, but I won't devote my life to something that to me sounds like pure bullshit just in case it could be better.

But then it won't matter because you are dead. I think this type of quote to myself all the time. So if you are atheist, afterlife would suck, but if you are a believer of afterlife and there is afterlife, it's usually good. If there is not afterlife they are neutral and nothing that they thought matters when they are dead.

 

Most Christians don't hate themselves and the money part is a bit of a stereotype. It's not like people link their bank accounts to the church's and just watch the money flow in.

 

Actually, the money the churches collect, go to paying the pastor, paying the bills of the church, and the left over money goes to foundations that they donate it. If any of the money is spent otherwise, the church is corrupt.

When you're a christian, you don't doubt your faith, so there is no discretion on if you'll make it in or not.
