[DENIED] Charitable Progression!

Sounds like a good idea, but in case of Paypal payments - what if they get charged back? There’s nobody from those causes registered here probably and it’s not like the disputer is gonna let us know he charged his donation back.

Also, @video his signature might conflict with this. Do their donations add up or are they immediately eligible for the minirank, etc?

 

I know there are some bad people out there but if the mini-rank promotes good cause I don’t know if that’s something that people would do. If it was to happen then at the end of the day a) it’s only a mini-rank, not a rank or something else that may reflect higher reputation or trust and b) you’re a scumbag.

 

Risk of paypal chargebacks far too high regardless of WHO you are. I can be a ten year ex mod member who decided to charge back. Then what? Same reason Richard never directly deals with paypal for Sythe donations

 

Your comment doesn't really make sense to the message you quoted of me, have you read what this whole thread is about or you just commenting on PayPal?

I still support this. If people want to fake donating for some pixels then so be it. Same thing goes for charging back payments. Adding a small minirank for the sake of a great cause such as donations to things like saving the elephants is a very, very small price to pay.

For the argument of people should be donating for the sake of being a good person, that can be said for any minirank on Sythe. “People should be joining CDT events for the sake of having fun, not for a prize.” “People should be advertising Sythe on their websites for the good of the community, not for a supporting business minirank.” There’s a lot more examples.

At the end of the day, regardless of intentions, adding a small minirank for people to do some good in the world would do a lot more good than bad.

1) FAKES: I doubt screen-share should be the method of choice. Who is going to go through the process of convincingly faking an image? I imagine this issue would be a minimal, for what is the consequence of a few sham mini-ranks? This isn't a rank of trust. It's a mini-rank. Also, consider the character of the individual who would tend to desire this mini-rank. I imagine these individuals would be less likely then gen. pop. to act fraudulently. Further, consider the effects of this implementation. I conject a substantial number of individuals would consider donating and explore various charities. A subset of those individuals would donate beyond what they would have otherwise, thereby creating benefit for those in need and fostering altruism.

2) CHARGEBACKS: Would there be charge-backs? Probably very few in proportion to true donations. Do you consider this a substantial issue? Again, would the effects of a few sham mini-ranks be minimal? From what I imagine, yes. Again, consider the character of the individual who tends to act charitably, who wishes to be viewed as charitable (by themselves & others). Even if an individual charged back on the charity (who would do this ...) it would be a charge back of a donation, not a payment. Not a scam (except for the time of the staff).

3) SYTHE CDT/HISTORY: This isn't a reasonable point. Who cares if CDT was or wasn't allowed to host events? Perhaps someone can elucidate WHY they weren't allowed to ... that might be a pertinent reason.

4) ALTRUISM: There is psychological evidence and philosophical reasoning that indicates true or pure altruism is fallacious. Humans are shaped and motivated by a vast amount of stimuli. It's illogical to purport that charitable behavior and donation to charity shouldn't be externally (communally) shaped and motivated, for that principle supports reduced donation to charity. No one donates (or commits any behavior) without getting something in return. People donate because of a cause. It's rewarding to donate for a variety of reasons. Related: look into the concept of effective altruism. Also consider that a number of individuals who would receive this mini-rank already donate . It's a reminder, and it's encouragement.

5) WASTE OF STAFF TIME: Well, OK. It's up to staff whether or not they care about this. It seems like the screen share method is not the move. Images/e-mail forwards or something more efficient seems better. Is it a waste of staff time? That depends on whether or not the reward (increased charitable/community giving of sythe members) is worth the cost (time of looking at images, googling to see if it's a non-profit org., assigning a mini-rank or whatever). You could also consider a few false mini-ranks a notable cost, but I don't really see it this way. I doubt a flood of people will pour into staff PM's with their charity donations and mini-rank requests.

All in all, the cons are slight in comparison to the pros from what I see.

Receive something for donating to charity? So basically make yourself feel better?. No thanks. I worked for 4 years in a voluntary role didn't need a big badge saying thanks. Set up a site promoting charity sure it's a good idea. Have a mini rank on Sythe for giving money to charity no.

 

Logistics are tricky but I support your intent. Seriously shocked that so many people are worried about chargebacking donations to charities...

Could also do some type of Sythe donation pool where all donations are packaged and distributed to charities that Sythe users vote on. Could then offer "Sythe giving 2019" miniranks with different colors (bronze, silver, gold, platinum) for different amounts. This is only annoying in that I'd prefer to pick where my donations go directly but probably more implementable for Sythe than the OP.

 

I think it is a great idea for the people who are donating for good reasons. But unfortunately on Sythe, people use any form of manipulation they can to get over on someone and it sucks that you have to think about that. My heart supports it but my head does not. Sorry.

Thats like asking McDonalds to promote Burger King's Whopper... Your heart is in the right place, but no support from me. If there was a way to give back to sythe whilst helping an organization lets do it. but thats just imo

 

Yea, this redirects wealth away from sythe and towards charity. Good point. No support.

 

While this suggestion is made in good faith, Sythe.org runs on donations and advertisements. Creating a competitor (no matter how small) is not in the sites best interest. Users are free to donate their funds to other organizations as they wish, but the site will not be rewarding users for it.
