[DENIED] Incorporate a Java applet into new user sign up

I propose incorporating the need for a new user to use a Java applet via the Sythe page to create a new account - this could be to generate a code used to go along with their account details or whatever (the action doesn't really matter - whatever gets them to use it).

THE PURPOSE OF MY SUGGESTION is so that Sythe can start registering users' MAC addresses - the easiest way to do this is via in-browser Java applet (afaik). You could even go as far as requesting/requiring current users to use this (possibly upon first login post implementation - but whatever, trying to not stray from the core idea).

For those that are unsure of what an address is, think of it as your computer/device's fingerprint. By knowing the MAC address used to an account, you can quickly tell which accounts were created or used on the same device.

It's far too easy to just create a new account - via proxy or not - in an attempt to evade punishments. A proxy is very easily accessible for anyone and although people can spoof their MAC addresses, this is definitely not as known as using a proxy for your IP.

I don't see this suggestion as having a detriment on legitimate users - as you can do nothing with someone's MAC address. I appreciate any feedback or ideas to expand/alter this idea.

 

In easy term what the fuck does it mean

 

A MAC address is basically your computer's fingerprint. By knowing the MAC address linked to accounts, you'll know 2 accounts were made on the same computer - as a crude example.

 

A lot of people have the ability to change their MAC address either by accessing their router and using the MAC Clone button, or calling up their ISP. Changing your MAC address is as easy as changing an IP, if not easier, so this just seems like its unnecessary entirely.

Your MAC address is for your device and is assigned by the device's manufacturer - calling your ISP won't do anything.

It is true that you can spoof your MAC and it isn't really difficult to do so - but people know far less about this than people do about masking their real IP.

I've used a tool similar to this first hand in the past and people are dumbfounded at how you link their accounts together.

No. Waste of resources, we can only do so much to stop ban evaders from joining back and I don’t see this being a good solution to it.

Also how would this disuade people from joining? Seems like it wouldn't be much different unless i'm missing something. The only way I could see if it being any different is it was a pain in the ass to get through/ is inaccessible to people for whatever reason, in which case, lets not even bother.

Waste of resources? Is the technical core really that busy? Isn't this why we have a technical core..
There is no perfect solution for catching every ban evader, but if this can help us catch them, why should we not do it?


Me personally, I know a lot about proxies and hiding my IP (from jagex, not sythe). I've been using proxies/VPNs for 6+ years. I have no idea what a MAC address is or how to change it. I support this as long as we can make it look nice, be accessible to everyone(nobody has problems signing up), and not be a pain in the ass to use.

 

This would be a waste of time, It's not hard to spoof your mac address even if you don't know how it wouldn't take 2 minutes to google it, I'd say the same applies for hwid also. It's fair to say a decent amount of vaders come from the rsps section where most servers have these in place so a majority would already know how to bypass them.

Also this is a free market. People should be able to join through a VPN/Any computer. It’s just not appropriate.

 

im not very savy with this type of stuff so feel free to correct me if i'm wrong but couldnt someone looking to ban evade just register on a virtual machine connected to a vpn?

 

True. I like Sythe being a free market, but you also just made another point there. I doubt there could be arguments about MAC addresses like there is about IP Adresses. It eliminates the excuse of oh I moved or oh it’s my schools WiFi or VPN. Makes sense we should track it unless I’m misunderstanding it, which I very well could be.

Just a thought.

 

I've heard stories of individuals using VPNs and other proxy agents to commit wicked acts on Sythe, seems like criminals love to abuse this website while on probation.

 

This would be aimed at the average person that's joining and hitting new users (rinse and repeat) - not an 'intermediate level hacker'.

That being said, if this would not be supported in Chrome that's a large amount of people so I'd consider this a dead suggestion.
