Deep expression on the current state of RS and why I think its time to move on.

So last night, I bought my best friend 300m for his bday, and I signed off for the last time.

I just wanted to write this, I know alot of people I have met these days have an agreement with me, but hey, maybe I can convince you to move on as I have too.

First off, dont get me wrong. I love runescape, I fell in love with runescape like I loved my woman. It was such a journey, from start to finish. But oh man, things have just drastically fallen apart.

All talk aside, I never cared if people botted or RWT'd, honestly it happens in everygame and everyone does it. Thats not the issue that ended the game for me.


So it all started in 2002, I just moved to Ohio with my dad for his new contracting job. I ended up at the library with other kids in 7th grade, seen them playing RS classic, and im telling you guys, I got hooked faster than a bass sniping a black worm blue tail in the bayou.

I managed to collect tons of rares, I had over 100 partyhats and 1000 mask by the time classic ended, securing my wealth in RS for the years to come (And indeed it did)

I played classic, till it ended, bittersweet, will always love classic. It was majestic and in its own way very original.

I went on to 2004-2008 scape. Boys I gotta tell you. This is where things were amazing. We had socializing, people having fun, people grouping up just to siege KQ bc nobody knew shit. I never had more fun gaming than this. Even huge clan wars were incredible.

To top the cake, things got even better as GWD , dragon claws etc were released. The entire time, nothing changed in the community. It was perfect.

Then comes this idea, an idea that I truly believe degraded and destroyed the game itself, as it would setup what would soon become the mortal killer of the original life and foundation of rs.

The idea was the Max cape, to some it was massively overlooked. The cape passed into the game swiftly. As I believe its purpose did as well.

Max cape was the start of everything. To you , you may have missed it, the purpose of this cape, the way it destroyed our community, the way it single handedly destroyed everything.

To break down its effect and the destruction it had on our game, we have to look at the entirety of it.

Max cape gave you the ability to want to achieve greater stats, in a game where the grind is unrealistic for anyone who has a job , or a family.

this is where they got us, where Jagex single handedly dropped a fucking nuclear missle and destroyed rs.

Socializing became feint. It was kept to a bare minimum. Players only cared about achieving one thing, the max cape.

PVMing, slowly declined, PVP (staying strong) (lets take a moment for our loving pvp community that through alll of jagex bs stood champions until the very end(eoc)

Towards 2012-2016. The game itself, OSRS or RS3. Has become about one thing, efficiency, your stats, your capes, thats it.

thats when TH /MTX promotions Hit rs3, and swift as it came, it destroyed.
Im not going to break it down anymore on RS3, or OSRS, because it should be obvious at this point.


It lost its touch, its feeling and its love.


I have maxed on both games,

I have had a wonderful time, me and my friends got every gwd pet on osrs, we achieved the achieve diaries/max cape, we no lifed, but in the end, we all quit, today I will be the last of my group that I have played with for 15 years. They all have families and we all decided it was time to let go.


so GL to you all in your journey, and GL with the future, I know when MTX/Spins come to OSRS theres going to be a huge riot and people are going to be pissed, so riot hard give jagex hell, you can't stop it, but you can sure voice your opinion and let them know.

Good read and good points but everyone eventually comes back. I've tried quitting many times and I find myself logging on atleadt once a year and grind for a week or two then quit again

 

You WILL come back, I'm sure. If not for the original, maybe for RSPS-s. Everyone have taken a break from it for a while
I used to play Rs when I was a child. Didn't play long, only some months. And yeah, times were VERY different. Nobody knew shit they were doing (inefficiency), but at the same time, people had lots of fun. Nowadays you rarely see that - everyone's "textbook grinding", where everything is done in the most efficient way possible. There's no fun in that. I bet those people have seen ONLY THE FIRST floors of random houses. They don't, themselves, discover anything, unless it's part of a quest.
Anyways, here I am, MANY years later, part of RS community. Tho I don't play the game anymore, I like to keep an eye on it. And program Rs/Sythe-related stuff as a hobby.

 

Someone's who played since 2002 will come back eventually, just for the nostalgia. I agree with a few of your points, especially about how much the focus of the game has switched. However, RuneScape 3 is Jagex's future. OSRS can't support their goals, it's honestly just a free money maker to them that funds RS3 ads and development. So in order to accomplish goals they to change and adapt. The landscape of gaming is leaning towards the changes they are making.

 

The social aspect was what drawn me into RuneScape in 2004. It's now sad to see that interactions among players are minimal and players are divided (RS3 vs OSRS, PvM vs PvP). I hope that OSRS mobile will bring back some players but I know that OSRS is a declining game that won't draw in new players. Feelsbadman.

 

not because you quit it doesn't mean everyone else should too. some of us actually still enjoys osrs.

anyway, it was definitely alot lot more fun back then. I did alot of "exp waste" stuff back in the past like doing castlewars and stuff just for fun and nothing else, but I definitely enjoyed it alot more. best of luck in life.

 

It's not just RS it's a majority of games now.

I've played this game for almost 12 years now off and on. It's a game that I grew up with and its a second world I love escaping to. Sometimes I play it excessively, but I will quit soon I can feel it.

Its hard af to quit but yeah I feel at some point when rs3 Is completely dead (even more than now), MTX is gonna come to osrs and we cant do anything

 

Waiting on mobile release....

 

This is so true. I literally can't play RS3 unless i'm playing effieciently, and by that I mean, I PvM, so I'm try-hard switching weapons for different perks when I use certain abilities, try to master my dps rotations etc.. It stressed me out to the point I literally had to quit. I don't really 'play' 07 much anymore however when my PC is on I'm always AFKing combat stats. Constant habit of the first app to click on when PC boots up :/

Not sure what to expect for the future really, don't want to think about it either with history.. when you hear about updates etc it's like, great, something different to do, but the past year there has been maybe a single piece of content on RS3 I enjoyed (Nex: Angel of Death) for those who don't know, it's basically hard mode nex, new arena + mechanics and usually 7 man teams.

bit worried about what's also going to come along with RS mobile.

 

I used to play Runescape for fun years ago, but tbh the game is fucked rn (OSRS and RS3), I only enter on RuneScape to make some extra money tbh.
