D3 and Constant Net Connection

So I have HughesNet Satellite internet (Don't post get new net, I know it sucks but it is either this or Dial Up and if you do I will report you as spam.) and I loved D2. I played D2 on dial-up perfectly fine but with hughesnet I get a constant 700 - 1200 ms latency. I really want to be able to play the single-player D3 and I am curious as to how the servers work. I know you have to have constant connection to their servers, but what are the servers used for exactly? I read somewhere that it just stored values and that the rest was handled by the host PC. Can anyone confirm this before I go and buy it? If I can't play it then I just may have to find other means of getting the game so that it doesn't have to require a constant connection.

Sigh. This is the one feature of Diablo 3 that bothers me to no end. One of the most amazing things about Diablo 2 is that I could play it no matter if I had an internet connection or not. I really want to be able to play Diablo 3 on a road trip, or at a grandparent's house, or somewhere without wifi.

It is also rather pointless. The only reason there is to be online is if you are using the online auction house (not necessary), playing a public game (also necessary), or chatting with friends (again, not necessary). We lived without all those things happening constantly in Diablo 2, so why can't we do it in Diablo 3? It sucks imo, but its still an amazing game so I can't complain to much.

Edit: I have heard rumblings of people playing pirated versions offline, but I can't 100% confirm this.

 

So what does that mean for me and my connection? Do you think I could play it? Anyone have any knowledge of the servers and what they are used for?

 

You need a connection to be able to log in. Without one, you're not going to be able to play.

 

I have a connection, I just want to know what the interaction with the servers are in-game. Does the Host PC do most of the work or does it do a bulk of the stuff server side?

 

From what I have seen so far, the bulk is on the host PC side. A good connection is really only required to play online.

 

I might download it and see if I can coerce one of my friends into letting me use their CD-keys for a few minutes to see how it will do.

the reason you need a connection is you use your battle.net character for single player. So your character needs to synchronizes with the servers

on D2 you would have separate characters for offline and online.

Maybe they'll introduce it later? there was nothing more fun than using hero editer in single player and testing skills
