Custom xbox one controllers

So i'm in the process of creating my own company for customized controllers, as well as a pro series controller to be used in MLG Competitions.

I have a few questions and if anyone is able to help me out please post below with anything that may help.

Right now I have some ideas for things that I could use on the controller, BUT they are ideas, how do I get my idea, to a physical item?

Lets say the item that i'm currently trying to create is a small paddle for under the controller or something, how do I take my idea somewhere, and have them manufacture it?

Also if I per say wanted different colored a, b, x, and y buttons, how do I go about getting them?

I'm also trying to create a foam fitting that I can put inside my own box to ship the controllers, who could I go to, to manufacture our box, and the foam fitting for inside of it?

EDIT: If anyone knows a LOT about painting and what kind of paints would be best for controllers, also hit me up because i'v yet to research it, but all the better to have an inside man to give me some advice/tips

 

It sounds like you haven't looked into this at all. You'd have to go to a packaging designer for the box, just Google your closest/best one I guess. As far was buttons go, I've no idea, It's something you'd have to look into, like wise with the paddle.

If you really want a massive seller, and I honestly think this would take off - Design a USB slot on the controller for headsets, rather than the smaller one there now, so better headsets can be used. Pro gamers/Sweaty little kids would love that.

 

You wouldn't be able to create an MLG controller. MLG tournaments only allow stock controllers. My first H3 tournament I attended I couldn't use my controller because I took out the vibration to make it lighter. Unless the rules have changed (I highly doubt they have) none of your controllers you customize can be used. The only thing you can alter is the shell color of the controller.

 

I have looked into it, quite a lot actually, but i'm just seeking help from someone who may possibly know more about this than myself.

I'm not looking to design anything huge like that although it would be nice.

Just not sure if I were to contact somewhere in China to have something produced, what all I need to show them/have made so they can send me a "Test" so I can see if the product is to the standard, and quality that I want on my product.

And trust me, I know the market for this is huge, and that's why i'm taking my time creating this business and not rushing it into the community, because there is no reason not to be 100000000% prepared on release, with multiple purchase options etc.

Well things have changed quite a bit, and I wouldn't be doing this if it was not possible.

 

You've looked into it but Don't know where to get buttons or packaging to sell your controller in? Fair enough! If you could design something with a USB headphone slot, though, I'd be very very interested in buying one!

What would make you better or different than scuf gaming?

They already have all of this worked out (packaging, advertising, sweat resistant coating, scuf gear, back paddles, loosened triggers, etc). They might even have a patent.

Also if your main feature was a usb port in your controller all xbox would have to do is add a usb port and you're out of business.

 

No need to act like a smart ass. I can find parts for an xbox 360 controller ANYWHERE. But if you would read the title i'm looking for xbox one. But thanks for your input

Anyone can create packaging, i'm going to use trigger stops, and adjustable hair triggers, i'm going to revamp the paddle idea to make it more accessible for the xbox one controller because of the design of the controller itself, the sweat coating could defiantly be made way better, because my hands still sweat when using it.

And no, i'm not creating a controller with a usb port lol.

My roomate customized Xbox 360 controllers, he got all of the parts off of ebay, including different colored buttons (he has 4 matte black buttons on the controller he made for himself)

 

So what would you actually do to modify one for MLG?

 

A friend of mine customizes 360 controllers. He buys the parts he needs off of ebay, and has the tools to take it a part. He had made his own Rapid fire controllers before. He just used a small drill to get through the controller where he added the button on the back, I'm assuming you could use some type of little hand saw to add a paddle area.

 

You don't. Mlg has standard controllers.

 

Only thing you can do is cosmetic additions, such as a custom engraving of your name.

I saw one at a competition that was anodized with his team logo and his gamertag but the controller itself was intact with factory seal stickers and everything.

 

To anyone saying that you are unable to modify the controller.

I love how every single person that has commented has no experience nor have anything to contribute to this thread... To start with who ever said you can't use custom controllers in MLG event's you have no idea what you are talking about and you should delete every post you have ever made.

You have to decide first what you are based around. Custom Controllers or skill based controllers. Don't attempt to market your product towards both you would have to charge well over $250 to break even and no one would be wanting to pay that much when they can pay less from a trusted and more well known company. Let me know what you decide.

 

Well I do plan to do both, because people out there want competition skill improvement controllers, but there are also the people that want a controller that looks good as well. It's obviously going to be pricey if they want both, but i'm only going to be using top notch quality paints and gear to create these controllers, and I have some skilled artists that will be able to paint any custom artwork onto a controller.

The only problem right now is i'm not really sure how some of the other company's are getting different colored xbox one analogs or a,b,x,y buttons. I'm sure they paint them but they are able to keep the letters and paint them too. I'm wondering if they use vinyl to paint the letters on the button then paint the whole button itself..

Its not hard to make the buttons with a plastic mold when I was custom making controllers we made them, I could sell you a guide and materials but I wont be giving it away.

And for the custom side of things every big company uses printers now, (Priced at $1500 - $4000) We where not able to keep up with the quality and no paint artists would unless they had a printer (forget the exact name of it).

Another note, I wouldn't bother attempting to make both custom and competitive controllers.

Controller: $50
Paint/Printer Stickers: $20
Custom Paddles: $10
Custom Buttons: $10
Postage: $25
Time is around 2 hours each not including drying time: $25/hr

So you would need to sell for over $200 just to make a little bit of money.

Good luck competing with the hundreds of other "custom" controller company's.

For a start you can easily get the custom paddles + buttons for way way cheaper than that. (Just buy in bulk from china or some crap).

Also as a start up he wouldn't cost his time for $25/hr.

 

A simple ebay search will make you look extremely stupid.

For 360 buttons they are around $12 - $25 for button set.

You will need to custom make paddles:
Button Clickers: $2 ea ($4)
Paddles/Plastic: $1 ea ($2)
soldering: $2.50 (comes in a pack costs of around $25 for a small roll you will be able to do around 10 controllers)
Electrical wire: 50c Per Controller.

I made custom controllers for over 4 years please don't act like you know what your talking about when you have not done it before. And for the $25 is for electricity and living but I forgot most of the sythe community is 12 and have no reason to make money because mommy and daddy pay for everything...

 

Those are pretty solid prices, although I have a supplier of buttons, I got 100 for 5.00

Just not sure where to go for the paddles to get custom made. I'll have to get them designed in CAD first.
