NASA tv will have coverage also. I just got off the phone with a buddy at Jpl and he said there is a slim chance of pictures and no chance of video from the surface of mars.

Just so you guys know, it is dependent on the rate of data, it would take quite a while to send out such high rate hd video with the upload speeds they have.

Agreed. Would be nice to see our space program properly funded. He'll, if this pans out as planned, we could probably guarantee that it will happen.

I'm pumped for evidence whether or not there has ever been life on mars.

A meteorite already proved that. It is microbacterial fossils but it was life and the stone had been ejected from the surface of Mars over 17 million years ago.

This is really pretty great though.

So is there a live feed now? That we can actually see the planet?

    How long will it last?

Unlike earth, we can't get signals around the planet for lack of satellites orbiting Mars, and signals can't travel through a planet as far as I know, so the feed stopped for the night because we aren't in direct line with the rover. It can't transmit data until it does have a clear path to earth. They said more pictures will be received and distributed tomorrow, but the live feed portion is over.

@nero, obama's scientific advisor stated on the feed that they will finally be able to prove the existence or lack there of of any life now or prior on Mars with this mission. I think what you're talking about is only theorized because the advisor listed it as one of the many great discoveries they're hoping to have during this mission.

I think that they saw remnants of life but weren't sure. I really hope they find life. That would be amazing.

Im glad they successfully landed onto mars, but i was disappointed about the live feed. I woke up at 4:30am to watch it, watched it onto 5am then they said it wasn't going to land for another 90 minutes, went back to sleep until 6:30am, watched until 7am, and it just a live feed of inside nasa the people reading out what was happening, no actual videos or anything. Once it landed it submitted 2 pictures one 64x64 and another 250x250 of just looking directly at the floor.

Was really hoping for pictures of the descent/landing, a video would of been amazing, ah well can't have it all xD

I'm glad they landed successfully and hope they find some sort of life there. I was also disappointed with what we were given, it wasn't much at all but still, I'm glad we landed as planned and I await the discoveries.

That is the landing video in a series of photos taken. Also, you are right about the data signals, the only way for us to receive data is either in a direct path to the rover or by bouncing it off of a satellite in orbit around Mars. That happens here on Earth when we are communicating with the astronauts on station. We have a chain of antennas that capture the signal from iss as it moves over the surface. A lot of the time, ISS is in such a position that it can not fully get connection with one of the antennas and there is a black out period. Also, I saw a few people yesterday asking about the no live feed coming from the landing. The bit rate was limited to 150 bits per second. They now have a live stream of curiosity coming up soon. Below is a pretty neat read on how all of that works.

I'm still disappointed that I missed the actual announcement of the successful landing. I only missed it by a few minutes as well.

Regardless, I'm glad to see that everything went as planned, and I hope that the research goes well.
