    Creating own MMORPG

I was thinking... What kind of languages would I need to create my own MMORPG. I wanted to created something like runescape classic.

Would I have to create my own game engine? How do I create a game engine?
What languages do I need to learn to get started?

What are some steps I need to take to create a MMORPG? I have no idea where to start.

    Thanks.

Don't use games as a motivation for learning programming...you'll never get anywhere.

Learn Java/C++ first. If you have an interest for programming as a whole, then consider pursuing it and spending a lot of time of it. Games, however, are generally a waste of time for programmers and the market is very narrow for a big career in it.

How long does it take to learn the basics of Java? Is it difficult to start? Where should I start off?

It all depends upon how much time you put into it, etc.

You shouldn't approach programming with the anticipation of creating of some gargantuan project that you'll likely never accomplish. Instead, you should choose a language that seems to suit the things that you'd one day like to make, learn the basics, and stick with it. One day you might make some hugely successful game, but that's really not something you should be thinking about before you've even started programming anything at all.

I wouldn't suggest doing that. MMORPG are not easy to make. Your actually supposed to make that sort of 'game' with groups of people. That's quite a hard goal to accomplish. Previous posts say learn Java, I would recommend doing that.

You realize that RSC had a large team of developers working on it, correct? RS2 has dozens of teams working on it around the clock... it's not a cake walk to make something like that.

Don't start programming with gaming in mind, that's a big mistake, and a noobie one at that. I did it, but my goals were for text-based gaming. While I'm fully capable of making one now, during my learning process I realized the extensiveness of it, and how ridiculously painful it would be to finish it.

Start out with programming fundamentals. In fact, I'd recommend any person who wants to learn take a class on the fundamentals, rather than jumping right in to programming. I know I've made a post like this before, guiding people into learning proper programming, but I can't find it.

Basically, learn how a program works, the different parts of a program, how to program, etc, before you jump into learning the language. Once you learn the fundamentals, choose your language and become thorough in it (like if your life depended on it), then start making small things, like the 3C's; clocks, calendars, and calculators. Get familiar, apply everything you know to as many programs as possible, look for ways to compile them all together...

AND THEN get creative, and make something unique. That's the way to go about it. But yeah, starting with a game, I promise that you're destined for failure ^.^.

Its best to start with the basics. I started with a basic program called Macro Scheduler. Then learned Flash ActionScript 3.0. Then Java and its worked out fine.

Start small then gradually move up :)

You could always try and make a mud style MMORPG with Python, C++ or Java.

if your only reason for being intrested in programming my best advice would be look into it more beacuse programming is more than a game its a passion and a great career if you wanted dont do it just for a game do it beacuse you wwant to learn something exciting and intresting you have to be dedicated to learning it you cant just learn java, c++ and other programming languages in a week and expect to produce a quality game or any peice of coding you need to experiment and explore different languages and get comfortable before trying to tackle something as big as creating a game im not trying to bring hopes down im just saying it takes dedication and you have to enjoy it to really learn it

I would say learn Java and C without making a MMORPG in mind, try something a bit easier...
You must learn the basics and build up from there, start by making a simple Java text game, after you have made it work how you want it to work; try to make it networked... etc.

    Good luck :)
